Default R&D selector problem

Just off the phone to ava and it seems i have yet another problem with the car .
Im running a R&D 6 speed box and they have now lost reverse gear, will be going over tomorrow myself but from what Alan has said is it feels like it is engaging but no drive???
Any one with experiance with an idea ? Is there a drive pin or could it be the dogs away?

Its ok Pete as the box worked fine when i got it off of him. He did say it had been rebuilt if you are talking to him could you find out who by. Think if it does need to come to bits Andy will strip and rebuild it as he has done a few.

Cheers Andy either way its going to be the cost of removal rebuild and refit and thats before parts , but the worst bit is the mapping was going well so mibi of got some use out of the car this summer.

How much they breaking for just now

Yip im sitting looking at Exiges on pistonheads justnow, but i know all the time and work thats went into the car will be worth it if it ever comes together.
It will come down to getting the box out and stripped then go from there , just wasnt sure if there was any known problem as its just reverse thats gone.

Bump.
Could see if it lost drive to one of the gears it may have stripped the dogs during mapping , but for it to only loose drive in reverse realy should rule out dog damage as there would be no load or revs on them during engagment.

i was told a few years ago to be very very gentle when reversing with them, and when useing 1st to set off,2nd,3rd,4th,5th, 6th tends to not break as you dont normally get that far!!

of course iam only joking, boxes have been reliable for a few, just think they need maintaining properly, either way they are usually cheapish to fix,but then so is an FFD.

Verry true Tim the amount of time and money i have spent changing and rebuilding boxes would be close to FFD money, but now at the stage that just fed up spending on the car without getting any use out of it.
Ive never had any problems getting reverse since i fitted the box, if it was a gear would say dog/gear damage but weird that its reverse as that would only have been used to get it out the shed and off of the rollers the last few weeks.

Just back from ava and it does seem that it is only reverse that has a problem, it does feel like it engages and the stick stays in the reverse position but there is no drive. When the clutch is lifted there is no vibration or noises i would of thought if it had done the dogs there would be vibration as it bounced on the parts left.
From what i was told it had been getting harder to get reverse then the other day while trying to take the car off the rollers it had no drive atall.

To save me stripping one of my spare boxes would the reverse cog be held on with a circlip, my first thought was if it was and it had brocken then went dog to dog while selecting it may have moved the gear far enough so the dogs dont mesh ???

reverse is a very small gear in the R+D box and this is why alot of them fail this way, especially in rally use and if we go 'off line' we are usually in reverse before the car stops, hence reverse gear in bits

Thanks Mark by looking at Dans pics it looks prity small and could se how it would fail on a rally stage when it gets bashed into gear after a spin/crash but for it to just go in general slow movement use ??? From what i felt today there was nuthing in reverse where i would think if the dogs were sheared there would be vibration on the bits left when keeping pressure on the stick.

This is Dans stripped pics(hope he doesnt mind me usng them)

This a nightmare Neil..........that one of the problems with the high powered cars is that they become more complicated and there is more to go wrong.

Yeh Euan its just one thing after another but hopefully it wont take long to fix. Its just typical that i only found out about it the weekend before i go back to work, so its either pay to get it removed or the car sits for 3 weeks with no work getting done. Was going to take my spare standard box across to temp fit so mapping can continue but were at the stage of upping the boost so dout it would last long.

The broken gears in the picture are not reverse, reverse fit's in te area circled if my memory serves me right!!

Whoever used that gearbox last must have known about this. It looks an expensive repair.

Reverse idler is notorious on the R & D for stripping....as MarkK has said IIRC they are Ł120 for the gear plus the cost of labour......

Martin, I think neil was using that pic as an illustration, I think his box is still in the car.....

I didn't realise that It could be a relatively cheap repair in that case!! As long as it hasn't been driven after the reverse broke.

Thanks Ian the box is now out of the car and will be going to Andy G to be stripped, just hope there is no further damage caused by bits floating around in the box.

Martin you were right about that box being an exspensive repair im sure Dan said it was over a grand for parts.

Just off the phone to AG motorsport and as predicted by Ian and Mark the reverse ideler gear had broken up and chipped a few teeth on the main reverse gear.
New parts should hopefully be here today or monday so car should be back on the roller by the end of next week to finnish the mapping .

Big thanks to AVA and AG Motorsport for sorting it out as i had to go back offshore .

do you think it has been the strain of reversing the car off the rollers that caused it

Not got a clue but wouldnt think reversing out of the rollers would put much more strain on than say reversing up a kerb.

Just glad R&D's customer service isnt as bad as i had heard as i think that was only a few days for parts, but that was one of the reasons i got AG to do the repair as they have delt with them a good few times before.
