Default 99 ron v 97 ron fuel, what a difference

since having the cossie back on the road, i've only put V power (optimax) from shell in it. Due to the strike at the moment all the Shell garages have no V power left, so i had to go to essos and get some 97 ron super unleaded. What a difference it makes! i used to think i'd never notice the difference but i certainly did, the car felt slower!

V power all the way!

pointless thread really, but thought i'd share it

ps. the cossie is stage 3, probably wouldnt have noticed it on a standard cossie

yeah; its not mapped for 99 octane, it runs one of stu's chips, and his instructions were not to use anything less than 97 rated fuel, but i didnt think i'd notice the difference between the 99 V power and essso 97 super unleaded...just shocked at the difference really

97 ron seems to be more reasonably priced than shell I found though. I filled up 97 ron once simply cos I drove past my shell and got to the esso garage and really needed fuel and they didn't have regular unleaded and the 97 super was the same price as regular shell 95 ron.

Deffo notice it, in a back to back test ( think it was Performance ford) was about 20BHP difference on a 500BHP saff, with NO changing of the ignition map etc ...

Be safe enough to drive on, but I would be staying well away from peak boost and revs IMHO....

Don't know this specific additive, but often when they claim to raise ron by one point, it will go from 95 to 95.1; as you can see, not a lot of difference....

My stage 3 sapph is mapped for v power but as its so expensive i mostly run it on the 97ron super unleaded, been running it on that for 4 years now, i stay away from high revs though and use the v power for track days, nurburgring and general spankings etc

I notice a massive difference in smoothness and more power on V power compared with ultimate/esso etc but my next best is TESCO 99 works really well.

i wouldnt run the car on the 95 rated fuel, your asking for trouble if its not standard.
Those octane boosters apprently are a waste of money for what boost they give you

james do you not have Esso supreme, or BP ultimate near you these fuels will both be fine if you add a goos quality octane booster to them

perhaps you should do some re-search before posting such bold statements.

taken from Shell's website

"Formulated for enhancing power delivery
Shell V-Power is also a high-octane unleaded petrol (99 RON) designed to help maximize the performance of many modern engines. This is aided by Shell V-Power’s Friction ModificationTechnology (FMT) which is formulated to reduce friction between the cylinder and piston rings, a critical area of the engine where lubrication is difficult to achieve. FMT is designed to help the engine turn more freely, and so help transfer energy from the fuel to the wheels more effectively."

how much are people actually saving by using any other super instead of V-power?

is it 2 or 3 pence a litre more expensive?

if you fill up 60 litres and the V-power is 3 pence more expensive you will save 1 pound 80 pence!

So people are risking their engines for Ł1.80!

Tesco 99 does well in tests though.
Many say that and Shell is noticably better than Esso and Bp.

when you read the stuff on the shell website about V power it just seems the best fuel to buy, some call it good marketing!

Quick Reply: 99 ron v 97 ron fuel, what a difference
