Default st170 problem

hi everyone

Bought myself an st170 a couple of days ago. Its just started making a funny noise, from inside the car i can only describe it as an air pumping noise, something sort of turning over and over maybe? I've tracked it down and it sounds like its coming from a silver box mounted behind the inlet manifold, there's what appears to be a cable and a wiring plug going to it. The car still drives fine. Anyone have any ideas to what it could be?

Thanks
Rich

That particular box is the variable length runner control - pulls the inlet manifold runners open a bit further at 6000rpm IIRC...

Check the cable going into it hasn't come off the inlet manifold...

No engine management lights or anything?

My mates did this. Just sounded like something whiring all the time. No EMS light on his. We disconnected the wiring plug to it which silenced it but brough the EMS light up until he got it booked into Ford. Repair isn't an option they replace the unit.

thanks for the help guys. I've had a look at the other end of the cable on the manifold side, and the cable is there, it has a black piece of plastic on the end, that presumeabley connects onto the wheel bit? The end of the cable is just flapping in the breeze, and it isn't broken. So i presume there is nothing wrong with the box, just the manifold side? No warning lights have come on.

Cheers
Rich

well i've only had the car since friday, it should be covered under the warranty, if not i'll just get it into fords to have it looked at. If its just a simple task of hooking the cable back on then i will do it myself, but I cant see any way that it will go back on, its pretty tight for space down there!

Thanks anyway

just been out to have another look after researching it a bit, and it appears that the plastic lug that the cable connects on to on the wheel bit has snapped off!

That bit right at the top. Looks like quite an easy fix, but gonna give the garage a ring in the morning.

well i've replaced this cam bit, went to ford and they had one on the shelf, so must be a pretty common part. Its still making the noise tho, but only a few times on startup and then it stops. Looked about on a few focus forums and it appears the control box thing is fooked too. So that will be a warranty job

The IMRC box can be "broken" when the plastic cam has snapped off.

As you say it's still under warranty, get it fixed.

It happened to me and was fixed, sadly not under warranty!

yeah the noise is deffo coming from the IMRC box, perhaps it has been damaged by constantly cycling back and forth when the cam was broken.

Waiting for a call back from the warranty people, so hopefully it should get sorted

Hi all, I purchased a focus ST170 about 6 months ago & having a few problems, I have a scratching sound when I switch off the engine ( around the oil pressure gauge area )
Engine sounds tappy/ticking
Vibrating accelerator pedal above 80 mph
Some loud knocking noise, not sure where it's coming from but sounds really rough on idle. The noise goes when I apply the clutch, have fitted a new clutch & slave valve cyli nder. Dual mass flywheel was slightly worn but ok. Have been told this sounds normall for the st170 & it's the 5th gear idle in the gearbox but I am not convinced.
I would be grateful for any help on these problems or advice
