i remember being on the m25 with a mate with a heathly powered cossie corsa came up the side of us, now the guy i was with would race a milkfloat if it overtook him lol, now the corsa looked standard just had a cage now he nailed it you heard the corsa drop down and nail it and he kept with us all the way to a good speed lets say my mate was gutted to the point of wanting to go home and not go to southend lol now i thought it was great im a huge blue oval fan in every way yet i was happy because you just know how the other guy felt, he proberly spent loads and spent loads of man hours working on that car and come on its allways good to have a little play with another car and loose cause when you get home the following day out comes the card and you upgrade waiting for the next corsa lol

Could have possibly been a c20let engine can get big bhp form them a nova decently done with a c20let would piss over most uk scoobys.

he says non turbo,a tb'd nova with cams pistons rods etc high rev limit would destroy a 300bhp scoob.

no need for turbo except to keep costs down.

my bro's astra stripped out with 250bhp would be on par or slightly quicker than my mates m3evo e36.

Funny, because I've seen it done countless times, and I'm sure most people without blinkers here have too

its always fun racing something that turns out to be faster than you as it makes u want more power, glad to see u didnt slag the nova off just cause it beat u like most people do

just worked out what power to weight ratio the nova and impreza would be and if u raced from a rolling start u can see why u got beat

a 700kg 150 bhp red top nova has a power to weight ratio of 217 bhp per ton

a 1400kg 230 bhp impreza has a power to weight ratio of 166 bhp per ton

nova

Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 150Weight without Driver (KG) : 700Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 217.730 - 60 (Secs) : 5.460 - 100 (Secs) : 14.1160 - 100 (Secs) : 8.65Quarter Mile (Secs) : 13.91Terminal Speed (MPH) : 99.30Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 13.71Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 101.13

impreza

Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 230Weight without Driver (KG) : 1400Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 166.920 - 60 (Secs) : 5.910 - 100 (Secs) : 16.6560 - 100 (Secs) : 10.74Quarter Mile (Secs) : 14.68Terminal Speed (MPH) : 93.88Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 14.28Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 96.75

taken from here
http://www.letstorquebhp.com/calculator.asp

and they are flywheel figures so once you take into account drivetrain losses plus the nova was stripped out you can see why 16v novas are so quick

I think destroy is a under statement lol the only thing a 300hp scoob or Evo has against a xe nova is the ability to launch and go round corners, once there off the line all the power it had is sapped by the 4x4 system which makes it far closer on the road than people imagine

When I had a fairly lightweight XE nova on a decent diff and good tyres and suspension, I could easily beat my mates WRX Sti through twisty bits as well, having nearly double the weight doesnt exactly help cornering and soon makes up for the 4wd advantages you would think it would have.
Its NOT just in a straight line they are quick.

Got to coombe and watch the faster lads there in theirs and you will see you need a fairly well sorted scooby or evo to match them.

I have too pushed many evo's and scoobs round a track but I didn't want all the haters to jump on my back so I didn't mention it

If a 150 bhp nova with an xe is this quick.

""""a 700kg 150 bhp red top nova has a power to weight ratio of 217 bhp per ton

a 1400kg 230 bhp impreza has a power to weight ratio of 166 bhp per ton""""

What about people running 16v zetecs on carbs or throttle bodies? Has anyone run a 140-150bhp N/A fiesta/ka?
I would interested to find out, what they can do. I'm in the process of finishing mine off.

Cheers

Prior to me deciding to give up on fwd stuff me and a mate were going to build a KA with a ST170 lump in it on TB's, there was no reason at all why that couldn't of been as fast as some of the Vauxhalls tbh.

I think MD COS on here has some involvement in doing one after knicking all my ideas

I am not a hater of novas atall. i think they can be made to be very fast but lets not be silly standard ones are not all that. a mate of mine had a 2.0 zetec xr2 that used to get raped by lots and lots of cars, what makes a nova with a 2.0 so much faster then? Its all the haters of subarus that make me laugh, they are great cars for the little money they cost.

1.3sr You do get some wierdos on here.

13.5 seconds is the fastest I know of up the quarter for a standard XE in a nova.

Ive yet to see a zetec xr2 get under 14 personally, although im sure they must have done somewhere.

Zetec isn't a patch on a xe engine, certainly can't compare the two even though they are both 2 litre and 16v

even a 150bhp nova has better power to weight, and people forget power to weight talks about FLYWHEEL power.

a scooby loses 3/4 times the power from flywheel to wheels as a nova so its way more than most think.

so no wonder a nova will rinse it

Scooby will have circa 170 brake going on the road, Nova circa 130, and half a tonne less to drag along, not rocket science.
Then you've the unknown state of tune of the Nova.
Time to be realistic, a uk scooby is nippy at best, not fast at all; a lot of modern diesels would embarrass it, along with Nova's thrown together for a grand.

Watch this space then, my XR2 is expected to make 180bhp + when set up properly, its not hanging about now, just needs fine tuning.

Don't spose you fancy one for spares? My mate has a twin turbo one on a V plate that spun its shells.

Never done it in a nova but have had a similar encounter in my Mk 3 Astra "Merit". Totally standard XE just a healthy one and I played with a Scooby side by side from around 30 to the top end of 4th gear. We both had 3 up in the cars and at the lights at the end of the stretch he demanded to know what engine I had in as his was "just shy of 300bhp". He was adamant it was a LET or at least XE on bodies. I had to pull over to show him otherwise. Great engine the XE.

i think he must have been taking the piss? an astra XE IMO would be no where near a standard scooby nevermind a 300bhp one

The same Astra used to sit dead with my mates E36 M3 Evo in a straight line up to 120 mate

Although it was unusually fit for an XE, I was told the engine had cams and head work in the past but found no evidence of it when I stripped it down for a look. I just took took it as being fit and standard from there.

Ians 3 door is supposed to be big power isnt it? And has a full sequential gearbox in it so this nova must have been going some!

Saying that, I thought XE novas are over rated after having one. fun cars, but not 'quick' as such.

A XR2 with a ST170 engine on throttle bodies (190bhp?) was struggling to push quicker than a 13.9 recently at Pod so id be inlcined to agree.

Even my zetec turbo only managed a 13.1 which says something really.

I know the M3 was real cos when I got my first stage 3 cossie it used to hang around the back of me by a few car lengths all the way.

Im beginning to wish I never sold that XE engine now

*CRIES*

Why am i bothering to build this then. ;-/ (track/rally car)

I was expecting a 150 bhp. I was hoping i would give 106, 205 and novas a run for their money, but it seems not! Poo. Its not that i don't like nova's, 205 and scoobies, but i wouldn't buy one.
I'm gonna go on the hunt for more upgrades! More cash down the drain!

A pal of mine is running a 1.6 16v zetec in a mk2 escort and is making around 140 at the wheels.
