iirc they have got to light up your plates but im not a tester so dont know for sure. ive failed for a blown bulb on one before and i dont think they are counted in the "if theyre not fitted they dont matter" catagory.

i was always under the impression every car had to have one anyway, to enable people to see your reg plate when its dark?

strictly speaking its not a fail to have no numberplate light is only legally needed at night/when its dark and you have lights on.

but in reality 99.9% of cars are likley to be driven at night at some point so an mot'er will fail it

also i think the rules apply if its there it has to work, ie the light fitting it there, so i has to work!

same as wings and mudguards. its not actually a legal requirement to have them as lond as u dont drive in rain or mud. this is how u see the hot rod guys get around it.

all u have to do is carry a tempoary attachable guard in the boot to prove if it rains u have them.

in fact i dont even think u legallly need doors to pass the mot!

It is without doubt a fail, unless you are going for a DAYLIGHT MOT, then you can only drive in the daytime, and must have NO other lights fitted.
It used to NOT be part of the MOT, but back then it was a CUSTOMS, importation requirement.
It does NOT come under if fitted at all.

You can get a day time mot but all lights must be removed or masked off
