depends when u passed ur car test?

correct me if im wrong but if u passed before 1997 then u can tow anything up the the weight limit for ur car. eg my landrover could pull a 3.5ton trailer legally

if u passed after 1997 you can only tow a trailer up to 750kg (bout 3/4 ton) so basically an unladen trailer

I passed after 97 and have towed a jet ski a few times. Has that been illegal then?

should imagine so. trailer prob weighs 100 weight, so unless the jet ski is over 1/2 ton ur ok

Taken from the Direct Gov website.... Everyone who drives a car has Cat B on there licence, only people who pass there test before Jan 1997 have Cat B+E.

Category B: Vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes MAM and with up to eight passenger seats
Category B vehicles may be coupled with a trailer up to 750kgs MAM (allowing a combined weight up to 4.25 tonnes MAM) or a trailer over 750kgs MAM provided the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle, and the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes MAM.

For example:

a vehicle with an unladen weight of 1.25 tonnes and a MAM of 2 tonnes coupled with a trailer with a MAM of 1.25 tonnes could be driven by the holder of a category B entitlement. This is because the MAM of the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes and also the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the drawing vehicle
Whereas

the same vehicle with an unladen weight of 1.25 tonnes and a MAM of 2 tonnes when coupled with a trailer with a MAM of 1.5 tonnes would fall within category B+E. This is because although the combined weight of the vehicle and trailer is within the 3.5 tonnes MAM limit, the MAM of the trailer is more than the unladen weight of the drawing vehicle
Vehicle manufacturers normally recommend a maximum weight of trailer appropriate to their vehicle. Details can usually be found in the vehicle's handbook or obtained from car dealerships. The size of the trailer recommended for an average family car with an unladen weight of around 1 tonne would be well within the new category B threshold.

"nope thats wrong it all goes on mam of the trailor NOT what it actually weights so your breaking the law even towing a unloaded trailor"

your wrong!

trailer can be 750kg so unless ur car weighs more than 2 3/4 ton then ur legal

my landrover is legally plated to tow upto 3.5 ton. It weighs 2.3 ton so even with a 750 trailer im still legal. just cant carry noting lol

you cant tow at all if you pass after 1997 unless you have got your hgv1 which automaticly gives you your trailer or if you pass a test. but you can still tow if there is someone next to you with the lisence and you have L plates on. i have the same problem

Maximum authorised mass

The term maximum authorised mass (MAM), which is also known as gross weight and permissible maximum weight, is the maximum weight of the vehicle that may be used on the road including the maximum load the vehicle may safely carry. This is normally shown on a plate fitted to the vehicle.
If a vehicle is unlikely to be used at its potential maximum weight most vehicles may be downplated, i.e. the vehicles springs or other components can be changed, so that only a lighter load can be carried. The maximum authorised mass or gross weight is a factor in determining what driving entitlement is required.

Unladen weight

The unladen weight of any vehicle is the vehicles own weight when not carrying any goods or burden. This is:
  • inclusive of the body and all parts which are necessary to or ordinarily used with the vehicle or trailer when working on a road
  • exclusive of water, fuel or accumulators used for the purpose of the supply of power for the propulsion of the vehicle
The size of the trailer recommended for an average family car with an unladen weight of around 1 tonne would be well within the new category B threshold.

maby cos he wants £700 from u

heres what it says about ur car licence!!!

Category B+E: Vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes MAM towing trailers over 750kgs MAM

Category B+E allows vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes MAM to be combined with trailers in excess of 750kgs MAM. In order to gain this entitlement new category B licence holders have to pass a further practical test for category B+E. There is no category B+E theory test. For driver licensing purposes there are no vehicle/trailer weight ratio limits for category B+E.

so theres the answer. you can tow up to 750kg trailer with your cat b car licence (as long as the gross weight does not exceed the plated weight of the car, which bascially means any average size car can tow 750 kgs)

better put ur mate right!!!

Just a thought, but does this include towing cars? If it does, ive broke the law numerous times without even realising.

If you tow a car on a rope or bar, with someone at the wheel and the brakes work it's NOT an unbraked trailer, but has to be road legal, taxed MOT'd and insured.
Then you get caught up in the Gross Train Weight area.

I suppose you could get done for not having a valid licence and therefore you wouldn't have insurance either.

I'd like to know how many people have been done though!
