how can you tell if you have a clutch or gearbox prob
i have crunching when i go from 2nd to 3rd and to 4th and down again and the biting point is right near top of pedal? any way of testing

gear selector? My Golf Gti used to do that and when driving erratically i had managed to move gear selector slightly out of line

been told my clutch is the problem with my box....
So i swapped the box and instantly fixed the problem LOL

it's more than likely clutch if it's all of those gears both up and down

depends on if you know someone or not, prices vary wildly, i got mine done for nothing but at most a garage should charge no more than 4 hours labour, on average Ł60 an hour

sounds like clutch.. mine does the same and my clutch if fooked
waiting for my new engine and then il put a new clutch in aswel.

If it only does it when changing gear fast and the clutch is engaging properly (as in not dragging when you select first with the clutch fully depressed), then it is the age old T5 problem of worn syncro rings. A clutch will not fix this.

When the car is stationary and you try and select first gear, it won't go in easily, because the clutch is not disengaging properly and is still dragging on the flywheel.
