Default 2wd diff options.

ok as iv been looking into 2wd diff options i need some advivce of people who have actuuly got uprated diffs in there car..

now iv looked at the gripper diff and need to know how it compares drive wise to a standard diff..

also iv looked at atb quaife diff and like wise need to know what its like on the road etc

or one of these diff's uprated VC to 240 Nm and uprated planet gears.

now the car will be runnign around 450-470bhp, and will ocasionally get launched.. my manin concern is te drive feel.

cheers aaron

hi aaron

as said to you on pm , all of these diffs that have been mensioned the weak point will be the cwp

the uprated VC and with the uprated planet gears is the cheapest option

i dont what power the uprated planet gears can take ? they haven't let go in the rally cars

this diff works really well for better handling and traction as the VC unit is uprated nearly by 10 times more preload than standard

ATB quafie im not a fan on the ATB it is a good diff as it does away with the planet gears (one less thing to break)

the only reason i am not keen on it is for the simple fact on track if a wheel is not in contact with the ground you will NOT have any drive untill that wheel makes contact with the ground again

good diff all the same kind of fit and forget

my personal choice is a plated diff that is because i use to have plated diff yrs ago in my mk1 and mk2 escorts and they were the bollox never broke one

I have had the gripper plated diff in my car for the last 8yrs (7.5" version) and have never broke it yet , in that time i have had one set of plates and had the diff serviced 4times (thats check only after a season of absue)

its not a fit and forget you will have to change the plates at some point as they wear out

even at 450 bhp you will not break the actual unit you might break the cwp and that goes for all of these diffs

aaron

theres a few people that have had their diffs uprated with the uprated VC with the uprated planet gears and they are well happy with it over the standard diff by a mile

hmmm well the car wont be used on track so maybe the quife atb is the way to go.. or the gripper plated diff.. just as long as i can get it serviced.

That is the good thing about the ATBs - fit and forget. I don't know many circuit cars that like to get "air" either .

if you really want a fit and forget diff without the worry of breaking then 9" VC is the way to go

If he is unlikely to take it near the track - what are the chances of him doing a rally stage? .

I have the quaife atb on my car.
400+BHP engine, 235mm tires.
I took the car to the ring last year and the amount of grip out of corners is ridiculous. The car just wouldn't powerslide....
So much better than standard.

I use the car on the road aswell (private roads ofcourse) and even when cutting a corner / muddy inside of corner, i never experienced any 'loss of drive'.
Maybe when one wheel is totally airborne, but in real life i never had problems with it.

yh i might speak to paul lincoln.. the ony thing is i cant justify spending that much on a diff.. im getting a new enguine built up soon, and new wheels, and a new afr gauge, new box thats going to come in at over 12k alone.

Marco what sort of power is the Bara 7" diff rated to ? Im running one just now but also have a newly rebuilt 71/2" gripper ready to go but will need to mod my rose jointed beam to fit it if the Bara diff wont cope with around 500bhp.

9" is the best way to go,not expensive in the long run,a Ł2.5k diff will be worth Ł3k in a few years so if you dont break it its effectivley an investment.

Aaron,
I think Marco was quoting you new prices from Bara which included the 3.64 CWP? These are expensive and rare, but if Tim has a 3.64 CWP 9" for Ł2.5k, bite his arm off . However, I suspect these are more likely to be 4.4s and are absolutely of no use to you what-so-ever. Be careful as even if it does seem a bargain, some of the early 9" diffs cannot even be converted to run a 3.64 CWP, so you could end up buying an expensive ornament .

why not a 8.8 ford cobra diff? proven in high torque, 600 hp V8 9 second drag cars using slicks, huge amount of ratios and different diff types.

i have now broke 2 gripper diffs, running about 600 bhp.both in a 7 inch case.the weak point is supposed to be the cwp,so that should make the gripper part indestructable.but the 2 ive broke ,the cwp was ok.
i now have a 7.5 rear diff, because the cwp is stronger.but as it seems the gripper part is not under warrenty when broken before the cwp, unsure what to do now.cant afford to spend 3 k on a 9 inch diff.

if somebody made a fitting kit for these i would buy one.but having to fabricate all the parts from scratch is too much work.

A plated diff from a E39 M5 is a possible modification for someone with weldingskills.

yes ive seen that as well. The E39 lsd is another cool option. I went the 8.8 option due to having parts that will make it literally bolt on application with as little fabrication as possible.

Aaron, if you dont want the hassles then Id say go the gripper or quaife. The quafie looks like the easiest to live with day to day and its a fit and forget item.

mine has got a 4.4 cwp,but then you would want to keep that as 95% of folk buying a 9" diff would be on 4.4's,so yes if you wanted 3.64 you would need to buy a new cwp,or find a used one,but the 9" diff is still a good long term investment what ever ratio it is.

Based on 7000rpm and 215/40x17 tyres = 140mph.

Based on 7000rpm and 205/50x15 tyres = 136mph.
