Default Bmw E46 M3..

Just interested to see peoples opinions of these, I spent all of saturday tooling round in my mates M3 ...

Very nice car to be fair, all the options and sounds really nice, felt quite pimp driving round birmingham with the roof down ..

Out on the open roads, it has to be said I was quite surprised how slow it was, I was expecting it to be much quicker, I think being around cossies has spolit me in a way as I expect all performance cars to stick you through the back window with the acceleration . But as a poser/fun car you can't knock it, very comfy at 100Mph+ with the roof down, handling is very very nice, such a balanced car, and so much better with the traction control properly off . The one thing I didn't really like about the handling (IMHO) is that the steering lacks a bit of feel, but I think you would learn the car over time and know how hard you could push it. Even with all 4 wheels howling it still felt comletly under control and safe. Brakes are good, again might have been spoilt by AP's on a lighter car, but they just lacked a bit of initial bite, but the power was there.

Overall? For me it would be a 8.5/10, nice car all round, and I would like to try a coupe as well to see how different to the cab it is .. Don't think I would ever buy one though, unless they get to around the 10k mark as they would be a bargin then

I've driven RW's and fucking LOVED it. Got a few nice mods including a tasty sounding exhaust. You feel good driving it and it goes well. Yes cossie spped can spoil you!

The Coupe is a much better car. Also, the geometry is set for the usual safe understeer, so needs some negative camber etc for some front end grip. Like Chop, I'm going by RWs very well sorted example (£2.5k of Intrax coilovers, £3k of AP brakes, £1k of CSL wheels).

Just needs a CSL bootlid (for the extra high speed stability) .

You'd have to GIVE me a convertible one, as I would NEVER buy one .

Excellent cars Will. Engine needs working harder than any of your turbo boys will enjoy and its power delivery makes it feel slower than it is, but excellent cars period.

Thats my opinion.

1. YOUR car is 493bhp? Mine has 7bhp more than that at 8500rpm . Where does yours run out of puff at - 6000?
2. Your car weighs 1700kg? Mine is 300kg less than that .
3. Your car is limited to 155mph? Mine is rev limited to 187mph.... .
4. Even your brakes are like your nob - considerably smaller than mine .

You beat me on creature comforts, as yours is a barge with aircon .

Yes, 378x32mm with HUGE titanium piston WRC 6 pots - considerably better than your cheap old Brembos :

Lets see a picture of your "Weeners" .

But where does it make peak power - 6000 or 6500?

Is yours unlimited?

I could bolt on a GT4088 turbo and get 660bhp . Even with your "soon to be 560bhp" (which you have been saying for 6 months ), your power to weight would still only be on par with a 440bhp Escort

maybe but remember my 8pots have to stop a whale from 200mph and your power to weight is flawed as you have 4x4 so would need 600 to keep up past 100mph

But that would mean leaving 1) your house and 2) your own little world

What has a grandad car got to do with the M3 thread anyway?

I would own an M3 if/when the cossie goes if I wanted a decent all rounder, handling power and reliability and comfort so interested in this thread. RWs has all the right bits and having seen a CSL up close on sunday at silverstone that would be a perfect car... though my budget would be more like an E36

I bet they'd wilt like a flower in the desert sun at the mearest hint of track use, trying to haul 1700+kg down repeatedly . So when are you coming to the Ring to show us all how not to crash and how reliable your German car is ?

What sort of fuel consumption do you see from an E46 M3? Just curious to know really as the prices are dropping nicely .

I remember test driving an M3 when I took my 330Ci in for a service, and the only thing that impressed me was the hot chick that took me out in it I'm sure they are great cars but I was expecting much more from it although I did love the sound I have to admit.
