As LIQUID is very likely to be involved forget water as this will help a fire progress.
AFFF is about the best, or Aqueous Film Forming Foam.
BCF used to be the best but is illegal now, though the RAF still use it.
BROMOCHLORODIFLEUROMETHANE was the daddy of extinguishers performance wise, but bloody nasty fumes.
The most common size is 2.25Litres, and can be discharged either manually or electrically.
Just have a look on somewhere like merlinmotorsport.co.uk.

Sadly if the fire has taken hold they are all useless.

As Tabetha said the only thing that was any use is now banned and that was BCF

Use them to buy yourself time, not in a hope to put a fire out, as it wont.

as above. they're only there so you can get out without getting toasted yourself imo. it won't save the car... but let's face it, which is more important?

If you want to go the safest route get a Lifeline plumbed system. Mine has a nozzle pointing at the driver and another nozzle pointing at the fuel injector rail. The challenge may be where to mount the bottle and how to plumb the lines in a car with full interior. You can see my install if you click on the link to my blog in my signature.

Peter Lloyd Rallying (there's a link at the top of my blog) sells the Lifeline systems. Mine came with a pull handle for outside the car a pull handle for inside, cables, lines, connectors, stickers. Cost Ł100.

AFFF is useless in a car fire,

pissing on it will have the same affects.

halon all the way,its also illegal to do 71mph on the motorway.
