Default Paypal scam, how it works (and has been done on passionford)

Basically, you put some items up for sale.
You setup a credit card, and you setup a paypal account from that.

Lots of people pay you money for lots of items on many different forums

You then spend all those lovely paypal funds on goods from genuine sellers.

You get sent all your goods

You send NOTHING out, as you didnt even have the items you were selling anyway.

Everyone you have scammed starts a paypal claim against you, which you dont respond to, it takes a couple of weeks to go through, so in this time you simply cancel the credit card, and when paypal finally decide all the cases against you, they cant recover the funds, so you payback nothing.

NET EFFECTS:
1) All the honest buyers trying to deal with you lose your money
2) You get all your money for nothing
3) Paypal get to keep their fees, so couldnt give a fucking toss

Be careful folks!

And this is all you will end up with for your money, an email from paypal:

After careful review, we have determined that the seller is at fault but
regret to inform you that we were unable to recover any funds from the
seller's account. As stated in the PayPal User Agreement, recovery of funds
associated with a Buyer Complaint cannot be guaranteed.

We appreciate your business and apologise for any inconvenience this
situation may have caused. Please know that we will make our best effort to
recover the funds in question if they become available in the seller's
account in the future, and will take appropriate action against the seller.
Such action may include issuing a warning, a temporary restriction, or
terminating the account. Keep in mind that PayPal uses a number of factors,
including member complaints, to determine when to take action. Due to
privacy laws, we cannot discuss the details of any action taken. We hope
you understand our policy and that it reassures you that you are safe using
PayPal.

I'm about to lose a claim as the seller is no longer registered with eBay so my guess is he's cleared out his paypal as well.

Sunny WON the claim, but they gave him NO money back, not even their fees which they still kept, they just told him "sorry, no money there for you, but we hope you are happy to use paypal in future"

i had this the other week, basically they said they tried to recover the funds, but as there was no money in his account they couldnt

they did say that if he does recieve funds in there then it will go straight to me or even if he tried to start another acccount he couldnt until this one is sorted, buts its a load of bolox as you can always use different details

paypal is shit, only reason i sue it is i buy a lot of stuff from usa and japan

and you should be covered if the item was brought through ebay aswell, if its not through ebay then your not covered thats what they told me

The other way that this happens, is someone links a bank account to their account, get all the money in, transfer it to your account, then go into the bank and tell them to remove the direct debit to paypal and then paypal have no way of recovering money from them.

As for ebay covering you, yes it does, but have you seen the hoops you need to jump through to get your money back from them?

disgraceful!

Even more so when ebay are now making it mandatory that you have a paypal account to ensure " buyer protection "

Nope your address isnt available to anyone except paypal, and they wont pass it on to anyone else, and arent interested in chasing you up as THEY have their money in fees, so couldnt give a shit if someone gets ripped off or not anyway, it would cost them money to try and chase it up, so they dont.

just watch who you buy from on ebay, if theyve been running long enough and good feedback, as long as feedback isnt all from the same person obviously !

I dont use Paypal and rerely use EBAY to buy stuff...

I brought an engine seen on EBAY 2 years ago for a Punto GT. OK, I phoned the bloke up and done the deal over the phone and not through EBAY itself. I paid cash in the day the item was to be collected, but the Couriers returned saying "The item has already been collected by another firm". I phone the bloke with no answer. So I txt him and he said no couriers turned up.

So organised collection again and the couriers came back saying "Another firm has already collected". The bloke swore blind no one had turned up and started getting irate. I said fine, refund me the cash and we will leave it... He agreed, but said he will take £20 off the £100 for wasting his time. I agreed out of kindness (And the hope I would get SOME cash back) and still 2 years later NO refund!!

I reported to the Police and the bloke has gone to Court and been found guilty. He has FAILED to pay the Courts anything, so I wont see any cash till they next arrest him which could be months!!

Its bloody stupid!!

That would be a pit pointless when sending 40 quid though, lol

Which is no doubt why the seller picked the sorts of values he did.

The WORST thing of course, is he cant even be held criminally responsible, as if brought to court for "fraud" he could just claim he posted all the items but didnt send them recorded, and there would be no evidence to show otherwise, so all the risks at worse if caught is having to refund a few people.
So fingers crossed someone does catch up with him and give him a fucking good shoeing in!

Looks like a minimum of 4 people that have been done over by the same user.

So an easy couple of hundred quid for them for a few mins posting on a forum.

i got scammed off an ebayer who never sent the item.

paypal did give me his address (and phone number IIRC), so long as i was prepared to give mine in exchange.

this scam does sound easy-ish, but as for cancelling credit cards, with alot of credit companies it can be a nightmare cancelling a card with them and it can take an eternity!

Well they have either done it on card and cancelled it, or done it on a bank account and cancelled the direct debit, either way, the effect is the same, the buyers do NOT get their money back, PayPal still keep the fees, scammer is happy, PayPal is happy, honest user of passionford is unhappy.

yep i see what you mean.

another thing is if they had "bounced" several paypal payments from their bank account in the past (i.e. paid with paypal while funds were present in the bank, then gone and withdrawn the funds from the bank), eventually the bank will no longer honour any attempts for paypal payments from the account.

this happened to a mate of mine using Natwest, and now he cant use his bank account for paypal stuff any more!

so if paypal try to refund someone, the bank will fuck them off.

i've bought several items in the past from a particular seller with no problems whatsoever, everythings been perfectly perfect
then he sent me the wrong item
so i called him and explained and he said he'd get it collected and send me the correct one, or, if he didn't have the correct one he's refund the money, minus the cost of the orignal postage, which was fair enough as it was only a fiver
5 months later, still no refund and no answers to me emails and i can't find the phone number again either
but he's still selling stuff, just not to me

wankers

This Paypal issue has happenen to me too Chip, buying from a regular 'nice' member on this board...Never got my paid-for item and and never got my money back from him.
He even filled in a missing form overthere at the Post Office and kept the insurance money too for himself... So double money for him, hope he's proud for it!
I wont put your name down,'mate', as I dont want to lower myself to that kind of level but it was clear to me that there are people who say they have the same hobby but are only on this board to richen thereself over someones elses back..

Cheers, Wim

Yeh Chip, he did. He put an item up in the for sale section. I have been constantly sending PM's for about 8 months. You should be surprised if you hear the name. At this point he's done more than 2300 posts on the board so that's regular to me..

It wont help me anything by putting he's name on here. I even made a topic about him and this issue. At the end people even started to backup him saying this things could happen and I should stop complaining..
Never heard from him again.
My money AND that from the insurance, what a guy..
