On the right car, rim tape (or whatever you want to call it) looks really good - So what if the Jap boys did it 10 years ago - I did in on a Skoda 15 years ago, and you've seen the pics Stav 
. If it looks good who cares who did it first. Black wheels always look smaller than they are and a coloured lip gives them the size back.
Bullett's car IMHO is a perfect example of how to do it
