Default Steam cleaning?

got silver leathe rin my E36, the alpina ones. thing is, my interior smells musty and old.

ive bought a little steam cleaner from ebay and was wondering if steam cleaning the leather will damage it?

also, will steam cleaning the carpets help towards getting rid of this musty smell?

any tips on removing this smell?

best bet, take all the seats, carpet underlay etc out.

clean all the dash plastics etc

then shampoo hoover and steam clean the carpet and underlay and leave them in the sun to dry and air out, then do the same with the seats

then refit it all...musty smell gone

p.s. as a tip while the interior is out. run a hose over the bodywork to check for leaks as these are usually where the musty smell comes from

If it smells musty then you don't want to be spraying water into the car do you!

i've suceeded with this method before, i thought it was worth a try before stripping it all out.

also used that upholstery cleaning spray-foam, that helps freshen it up. and 2 or 3 goes with something like autoglym leather cleaner.

then leave the car with everything open for a couple of days (presuming you have got a safe driveway to leave it all open on)

Buy a dog.
My escort permanently stinks of labrador now, effectively masks anything else.

piss on the carpet. nothing overpowers the smell of piss. especially cats piss, thats why its one of the main ingredients in some perfumes and aftershaves

Strip it out, clean, then re-fit. Job done.

Although theres no reason why you cant just steam the seats and carpet while there in. Used to do it all the time at work and works well, as long as you leave it running with the heaters on full so it can dry out properly. Usually takes a good few hours to dry fully. Dont forget to leave each front window down about 2-3 inch though so the moisture has somewhere to escape.

it also helps after a major steam clean and foaming session to put a dehumidifier in the garage with the car afterwards, obviously leave the car windows and boot open in the garage

just leave the window's open and go to the car wash

that way you and the car get a wash in one go

Take the interior out, clean it, sort out any probs and put it back together again.

Fabreeze, Shake n Vac etc are only masking the problem and it will return within a few weeks.

Come on, do it properly.
