Default Towing trailers...

Ok, just wondered what causes a car trailer to sway side to side when being towed and how do you solve it? I`ve heard of it before, but not sure what is causes it....

Cheers, Ed

Usually caused by a poorly loaded trailer. worst if too much weight to the rear of the trailer so it lifts the rear of the towing vehicle. i usually load my car on trailer so its weight is slightly more to the front. also tow vehicle that isnt up to the job dosnt help. the heavier and longer wheelbase the better. large 4x4's are ideal.
hope this helps.

Yes incorrect nose weight can exagerate it certainly.

Only time ive ever had a trailer really start wiggling about behind me, I had loaded it with the weight too far back (cause the car I was towing with had an engien and 2 gearboxes in the boot so couldnt take anymore noseweight, lol)

Same as Chip, mate towing his 3-door with a 4x4 and had loaded spare wheels in the boot of the 3 door, was wiggling for a good mile.....

with myself and mates behind going oooooohh arrrrrrrr oooooooo arrrrrrrr

We then pulled over and moved the wheels into mine.

That makes sense, when ever we load it we make sure the weight is just over the back wheels towards the front. Its never done it before, but it did when we put an empty Granada saloon shell on it in the same position which is what i couldn`t work out...
