Default Diesel Engines, Mileage?

Just looking for another cheap hack after bending my beloved Rover and contemplating a cheap diesel at the moment but I have a couple of questions...

1. I've seen a couple online, namely Pug 306's and BMW 325 TDS', they have about 150k+, in some case 180k+ miles on them!! Is this an issue on diesel engines or do they run for alot longer than a petrol engine normally would?

2. Is it really worth switching to a diesel car with the price of diesel fuel as high as it is at the moment?

Thanks

price per mile would be about the same as a small petrol engine car

the more the price of petrol and diesel goes up, the more the distance of the price between the two would need to stretch to make it not worth your while doing it.

at the moment diesel is about 10% more than unleaded, but for example a mondeo TDCi does 45mpg and the 2.0 petrol equivalent does 35mpg, so it is using 25% less fuel.

at present, diesel would have to cost 1.40 per litre with petrol at 1.10 per litre to cancel it out.

i would avoid the pug and BMW high milers, also contrary to popular beleif VW and Audi's arent much good over 150k (been there done that on a few, and got the huge bill t-shirts to prove)

Same situation as my old Rover Rich, called it a peice of shit but the only maintenance I did for nigh on 4 years was to change the plugs, once!

I need something similar, but don't know if Derv is the way forward? Everytime I look at Mundano's I just can't get over how ugly the Mk1's are! Pmsl

Ok, back on track. A high mileage diesel that has had proper and regular services will be ok imo. Mine still starts 1st time. I never check the oil or water level, thats what the dash board warning lights are for.

Fpmsl I'll have another look around autotrader I reckon!

There was a Mk3 Golf Diesel, lowered on some deep dish rial rims that looked quite cool, was only about £600 but i'm thinking you get what you pay for!

Got a Fiesta 1996 1.8 diesel non turbo, does 50mpg+ and it's a good little car!

It's a ghia so got all the extras (Power steering/aircon/sunroof/electrics seats+windows/Alloys/alarm/wood dash) It's a lovely car. If not a bit sluggish but i bought it for mpg not speed!

My 1.9TDI 110 VW Bora is about 600miles shy of 180000miles - regularly serviced, original engine, gearbox, turbo, radiator etc etc.

I bought it about 2 1/2 years ago with 120000miles on the clock!!

I have a Mk3 TDi Golf thats done 235k and still starts and drives perfect, flew through the emission test at its last mot about 6 months ago.

Cost me £50 and all it needed for an mot was 2 tyres and a wheel bearing, have done around 10k with it in that time and has never missed a beat !!!

Cheap old smokers that you dont pay to much for or give a shit about is the way to go !!!!

I change the oil in my Focus every 3 months, sometimes earlier if I've done alot of miles (and I'm a high mileage merchant normally, let alone if I class a period as doing alot of miles). Sounds a bit like overkill, but for what it costs me it's worth it. 130k and on her third cambelt too - never mind this 100k nonsense, changed at 70k and 120k. And it'll get done again at 170k.

Get an old Escort TD Diesel, they run forever and cost absolutely bugger all to buy and keep going. I've had several. I used to do 30k miles a year (I do 20k now) and they just run and run, and you can do oil changes etc yourself with cheapy diesel oil. The bodies rot away before the engine gives up. Don't get an early non-turbo diesel though, that was the first one I had and they are hard work, seriously slow, more like a tractor.
