I would have even driven him to ensure that he went without it!

Well in the 3 times I've been abroad, not once have I had to show my passport, so maybe the answer's not quite so clear...

How the hell have you got away with that? I've flown to Germany once every 4-6 weeks for the past 2 years, and ALWAYS had to show my passport at at least two points through the airport! Same goes for ferry crossings...

Didn't need to take your passport between 1939 - 1945 in the RAF

It doesn't make a difference if you drive through France to Germany, but it certainly does if you're flying (not internal flights)! Especially since 9/11, loads of security... everyone has to take their shoes off FFS

Technically no, as we are all european so therfore don't need a passport, just a suitable form of photo ID, but in reality yes, you will 99.99999999% get checked both sides.

Not according to the Home Office!

Although the United Kingdom is part of the European Union (EU), you still need to carry a full British 10-year passport (or five-year child passport if you are under 16 and not on a parent’s passport) every time you travel to Europe. This includes day trips and travel by Eurostar.
Many countries no longer check passports at their land borders, but they still expect visitors to be able to produce a valid form of identification. For UK travellers this is the British passport. Remember, your passport will have to be checked at immigration control when you return to the UK.

dont need your passport traveling in schengen area... is UK a part of it?

edit: yes you have to as England is not a part of it=)

you could travel around all the country's in blue with out a passport=)

do you live in a country that is Grey you have to show your passport, not necessary on the airport you are traveling from but deffo to the country you are traveling to

edit2: being part of EU and being part of the schengen agreement is 2 different things=)

Again that's for internal borders, and no the UK is not a part of the Schengen agreement.

I can't believe people have been able to move between countries (not internally) without showing a passport! That's crazy!

We had an Apprentice turn up at Liverpool airport with his driving licence cos his mum said you can go anywhere with photo ID !!! He obviously was sent back home and flew out the next day.

But Gods honest truth we had a grown man pull his Passport out of his pocket on the M6 at Carlisle ready for Scottish customs !!!
