Who knows the law on number plates in UK?
Got stopped tonight and grilled about number plates and told they have to be changed ASAP.
Do we have to have plain black numbers nowadays? I didnt think mine were particularly bad, but hey, the laws the law i guess.

stu, i know the letters have to be the same thickness all the way around, which yours seem to be, not sure if they have to be a solid colour....but i’d guess thats the problem.
if you cant find a definate answer, send me a pm, and i will check our stuff at work, as we do lots of class four stuff etc etc and i will be able to give you the vosa regs on number plates.
but your problem is road traffic act related imo....

3D letters are not allowed, must be solid black apparently, (just phoned my copper mate), although he said he would not tug you for that

How unusual, a copper harrasing an obvious threat to society, the bad man who has **maybe** a slightly illegal plate.... Glad this country is so crime free that they can take the time out to inform people of thier naughty ways Cunts, the lot of them

Hi mate i make plates up at work and ss far as i can see, the only thing that's really even close to being an offence is the writing under the letters: powered by MSD (as you are only allowed by law where the plate was made, or the fact that the flag is thin.
The spacing and fonts appear to be perfectly legal, and we still sell plates at work with 3d lettering so they're fine.

plate digits are classed as black depending on how much light they reflect.... 3d style reflect (or fail to reflect) the required amount of light....thats why halfords still make them... as well as hi-line and 'carbon' digits...
hope that helps stu... to be honest if you've had a problem it might be easier to change them to black.... however if you contact signam (the company who supply halfords) they will be able to explain the law and maybe offer some advice? i've always found them extremely helpful about their products....
good luck

number plates must show a bs kite mark ,also supplier who made up the plate (bottom middle)
also stu 3d lettering is now also illegal pal .also not allowed any honeycome or ghosted background on the plates
found this myself when i received a 30 pound fine for my rear number plate not conforming (has rs logo on the side ,also ghosted with cosworth and in diff font)
couldnt beleive it as i questioned the traffic officer as i didnt even have a front number plate on the car at all due to me removing it lol????
he didnt care and just ticketed me for the rear non conforming ,when pushed he explained that its due to the anpr camera,s fitted to police vehicles not being able to register non conforming plates etc thats why the font ,spacing, etc is so important now
bummer really

so your saying i have to throw my five year old number plate in the bin because it doesnt have the info of who made the plate on it?......it wasnt required back then.......
NEW plates have to have this info when sold...but old plates dont.....so it isnt illegal just because it has no postcode....prove how old the plate is...you cant

The British Standard also requires that a number plate must be marked with the following information: -
1. The British Standard Number (currently BS AU 145d)
2. The name, trade mark, or other means of identification of the manufacturer or component supplier. (The company who actually make the number plate.)
3. The name and postcode of the supplying outlet. (The 'supplying outlet' is taken to mean a company whose business consists wholly or partly of selling number plates.)
4. A non-reflective border and the Euro-symbol with the national identification letters are optional additions.
5. There shall be no other markings or material contained on the number plate.

3d lettering is perfectly legal, as above the only real thing they may / could get funny about is the powered by MSD bit at the bottom, although you must've had a real arse of a copper to pull you on that. If the car is 51 plate or newer it has to have the BS mark and the postcode of where they are produced, although if you are a car trader I believe you can get away with have the dealership underneath (by law the car trader should keep a record of who owns / bought the vehicles etc).
If it were me i would leave them on, and if you get tugged ask why they are illegal?
Chris

Be careful that they don't take the reg away from you. They can do that by law if you get tickets and ignore them.

I think the copper was being a total canunt. However, forces have periods where they are told to crack down. Truth is - u were pulled because u have an M5

The background surface should be reflex-reflecting but the characters must not.
3D plates mate such as the ones displayed by Stu are not legal as the 3D is created using grey and black characters and the DVLA states :
Lettering should be black on a white plate at the front and a yellow at the rear

The postcode bit of supplying dealer is ONLY relevant to certain age vehicles, as I don't have to have these on my cossie.
I got stopped and told off for the digits on my legally spaced/fonted rear plate being 2mm TOO NARROW, seriously beat that for a jobsworth, std(traffic) police issue is a 6" steel rule for checking as well, in case you didn't know.
It may not have helped my cause saying I was going to shag his(coppers) missus when he was out as "everyone else did", think that annoyed him a bit!!
I have 3d, no postcode, legal spacing etc.
As far as I am aware the regs are VAGUE to say the least, citing the something like the font must not differ substantially from that shown(on the dvla site) or words to that effect.

I don't even run a front number plate, also the rear one is little! LOL
Highly illegal, having a maximum fine of 1k has made me think twice though!

The reason you got told is there is an operation tasked to the traffic dept of the Lancashire constabulary by the powers that be, TBH the coppers are not impressed by it talk of tail wagging the dog, however they have to be seen to be carrying out orders.

F-ck Stu,
Sounds like they're really tight in your part of the country........or the copper was just a total w-nker. Seems really harsh, and I'm sure there's alot worse than that running around the country. All I can spot wrong is the lettering being "Three D". The Motorsports Developments at the bottom is legal, as that could have been the dealrship selling the car ????
Sounds like you've been particularly hard done by.
Probably the Copper has always wanted an M5, but hasn't managed to nick enough minor traffic offenders to get his promotion. Meanwhile cars are getting broken into at multi story car parks and side streets while he's giving you shit for a number plate that is perfectly readable by anyone who's not blind.
