There is only one choice .
I USED to stock Mobil 1 and Castrol RS, but after my own experience with these oils (the Mobil loses pressure at high temps and the Castrol unwinds its molecules and expands), plus the extensive tests that Rod carried out, I now only stock the Silkolene. I could easily get either of the others and it IS cheaper, but I only sell things I would be happy using personally.

Up to that point I did not want to change from Castrol & turned down free oil, the results from an independant chemist changed my mind & I would not use any other oil. Kieth Cowie also uses Silkolene.

I had results of Chemical analysis done on Castrol RS & Silkolene after Topspeed runs. The RS was way out of Spec & had a very high Petrol content & small traces of metal. The Silkolene ran hotter had very low Petrol content & no metal traces & remained within Spec.

Goes to show what becomes of marketing and peoples perception of the ''big'' names and that they are not necessarily the best option out there.

so you didn't test the Mobil 1 Motorsport oil ????
What is the significance of fuel and metals in the oil??? Is it not the job of the oil to collect contaminants.
I would have thought it is down to the condition of the engine resulting in higher contaminants, overfuelling leading to fuel in the oil etc etc.
Slightly confused , looking to learn, i do understand a little chemistry.

Metal is obviously wear, we are talking minute wear but wear all the same.
After a Topspeed run on RS Castrol my newly rebuilt engine had 8% concentration of Fuel in the sump this affected the oil & its ability to lubricate. Remember 8.4k. Nitrous & 200+mph are a strain on any engine .
Using Silkolene showed no metal wear, still within Spec as a Lubricant & less than 2% Fuel, that was on Mikes suggested oil.
Opie oils then suggested I use a 5-40 oil from there range which was more expensive it solved all the problems.
Not sure of all the ins & outs but the expensive oil ran hot enough to burn off any petrol by-pass under these extreme conditions the other oils only partly did this & became comtaminated. Remember we are trying to protect an engine not worry about using a bit of oil. Oil pressure dropped as they said it would, showing that high oil pressure does not mean good lubrication.
Please dont ask any technical questions of me, cos I dont know or care about any other technical details.
ps. If i had suggested to Mark Shead that I was going to use Mobil 1, he would not have put the engine in the car & probably used it for his hair.

...jeezs....in a road car normal mineral oil is fine!...infact even a track car dont need anything much better!......do you honestly think you would notice any longevity difference in your engine?...Rod maybe needs a better quality lube due to extreme coinditions...but for most its all a con really as the actual quality of oil only dictates the oil life..ie you can go upto 20k miles before any degrading on for example mobil 1 and no cossie has that done..more like every 3k its changed a waste of money!...Having said that my merc runs mobil 1 and the f-car shell helix but thats only because they are proper engines.. LOL

Iva always used Semi Synthetc Texaco Havoline 10/40 without any problems. Oil changed every 5k miles, topped up around a litre a week though on my last one as it burned a bit being caned for 400 miles a week, so it was always clean anyway, lol. Plus as an added bonus its only £14 for 5 litres from my local Asda .
Why buy expensive oil to have to top up and change it that regularly, IMO its a waste.
My cossies are driven in anger 90% of the time they are being used and Im yet to have the oil cause any problems.
My 2p's worth.
