Rich, i think the general census is................ horses for courses
Jon's (now andy's 2.1) uses Mahle pistons, std rods, and gets a respectable 290 odd bhp, Jano obviously has is own supplier of steel goodies (unsure of power figures, never looked) and Phil has given you a very good link to a set of forged pistons from america
All depends on how much money you have for the spec/power you want

so is there a summary to this thread then? ive pm'd jano to get a bit more info on these rods an pistons he can get as i cant be arsed to trawl the net to find cheap steel rods phil said to fuck off about to go with the pistons he put a link to.
thanks jon for your comments, the power im aiming for depends on the spec as i work backwards i'll build the engine with all the best bits i can afford then ill spec the turbo and management to run it. so i suppose the answer is as much as possible but i know with standard rods i'll be restricted but thanks everyone for your help

I never went for value for money in mine! If I did I would have used second hand pistons.
Ł600 for steel rods/pistons is very good, never said it wasn't.
I never built mine to get loads of power.. it just happened it made respectable power. These pistons were advised by my engine builder to use. I was aiming for around 250bhp so these were ideal.
Good point there Tillio,
Ants 1.6 CVH get's 275+bhp with normal bst. (Did get )
Yet Jon's 2.1 only gets 20bhp more!
IS THAT VALUE FOR MONEY>?

I take it the rods are these:
http://www.focus-central.com/catalog...d=1&sid=&pid=2
So I take it both these come from the US so Ł600 is the price *IF* they don't get stopped by customs and add 17.5% ?
PhilM or anyone - do you know how thick the crown is? Can you machine them to a lower compression if you want?

TILLIO,
well mate in reply to what you wrote yesterday, money isn't a problem, just want some strong, hard as nails, forged pistons and possibly rods, but i'm unsure wheather to use the standard rods? I'm gonna be running a 2.0L zetec turbo soon, a respectable 250bhp would be cool, possibly a little more.. are the 2.0L rods any good? will the last for long?

A set of eagle H beam rods can be had from the states for Ł260 at todays current exchange rate (they also include ARP rod bolts). Pistons will set you back Ł230.
Its all not hard to find on the web. Just do your homework. (look for ZX3)
The vauxhall pistons are a cheap option, but bear in mind they are not a straight forward fit as you do need to shell out for the little ends to be machined. This will obviously add to the cost. I have them in my engine but the next one will be full of states side stuff.
If you want to avoid import duty and VAT just find someone who is going to the states and get them to bring them back un-declared in their suit case. Alternativly get the state side company to state the value as very low when they post them (eg Ł20) and then you will only pay tax on that amount this side. Not that i have done either of these before, you understand!

Garage19, just been doing a bit of searching for the eagle H beam rods, found a good site that sells them(campbellenterprises.com-any good???), they sound the dogs!! I got friends who live in the only tax free state in america, oregon, so could probably get them sent there, then here quite cheap too!!!
do you have matching eagle pistons?! are they any good?!
what car you got mate?
