I had this on a car a while ago. Turned out to be the poxy Clifford alarm that was fitted cutting the feed to the pump for no reason when i driving along. I bypassed it and it was fine after that. If you,ve got an all singing all dancing alarm i,d check that.

well. if when the pump was rewired, the earth wasnt renewed aswell, the earth may well have high resistance, this can cause the relay to overheat and fail....when the relay cools down it works again...

so if it hasnt been done...renew the earth, and earth it to the body somewhere clean...i did mine under the back seat,

so you have used a live from the battery fused near the battery running through a relay (triggered on and off by the OE fuel pump wiring) and a new earth cable to the pump same AWG as the live to the pump.........

is all the above correct ?

so you really need to change the relay, as its probably melted internally....check all the relay connections as these can get hot and melt aswell....

and re earth the pump.

the relay shouldnt get hot, so when you run the car you can check it stays cold.

it doesnt matter if its in place, all you need to do is disconnect whats not being used.

as you know the standard power feed is triggering your relay, so that has to stay in place....

the earth can be left in place, just disconect it from the pump, run a wire from the pump straight to the body, using the same size cable you used for the new power feed, making sure any connectors are soldered on.

"good" old cliffys eh!!
I cannot beleive that sparky did not at least strongly advise a decent earth wire needed to be done as well.
I use a 40amp relay mounted just behind the rear seat as there is a little hole already there so I used it to hold relay holder, I even have a short length of wire with a spade on each end in case relay packs up(never yet) so I can simply put this wire in place to run direct, ie all the time.
I ran my ground direct from battery with 28/030(17.5A) but used thinwall for the live of 32/020(16.5A), as I had run out of that colour in non thinwall.
Do NOT solder anywhere that is subject to vibration, as the flux(ACID) used in the solder WEAKENS the connection right at the point where the solder finishes, that is why looms are normally(properly) crimped.
There is NO point doing a reconnection on a boot floor subject to water/corrosion etc.

Pete if you've got a Clifford alarm I can almost garantee it being that.
I had a load of problems with mine, got it sent off checked over, serviced the lot
Decided to change the alarm and never once had another problem with it.
Get yourself a new alarm mate, Clifford's are shit!

Is it a CAT1 setup. IIRC there are 3 circuits that are immobilised? Have all 3 been removed as one of them should be the fuel pump. Plus if they have, you have a cossie that has no immobiliser

let me know if changing the pump sorts your problem, then i will steal it

good luck, but i dont think the pump itself is the problem mate
