Default Diesel experts question.

Are there any obvious reasons why a diesel will get very poor fuel consumption.
ie: reather than 50 mpg about 37 mpg.

A newish car with 30k mls. 2.0 TDCi Mondeo.

Any leads appreciated .

What sort of cruising speeds?

A diesel uses as much fuel as a petrol on wide open throttle (engines being equal outputs).

Dave my A4 is shit on diesel....Ł65 a week to fil the tank & im lucky is i get 500mile to a tank. The car hates short journeys around town, get it on the motorway & i can see 52mpg.

I hate the fooking car...im gonna run the cossie for a week as it will be cheaper.

You need to be more gentle with it. If you drive it like a petrol car it will be shit.

I got mine about 5 months ago, does 37 if driven like a cunt, 42-43 being sensible-ish around town and 50 on the mway being gentle and cruising at 80 ish

Cruise control is shit at keeping mpg high............you need to be gentle with the throttle and not keep dabbing it.

My Boras the same - doesnt seem to matter how I drive it - I always get around 400miles to a tank - cost me Ł59 to fill it up yesterday - thats approx 13.5gallons & I ALWAYS get without fail around 400miles to a tank (average 30mpg) whether I hoon it everywhere or drive like Miss Daisy!! All my mileage is extra urban I'd say so that obviously makes a difference.

Hmm..
Temp gauge sits in the middle.
I was crusing at about 70mph when it was in didcating 37 mpg.

When we filled the car it said 520 mls to go, after 90mls, it is telling us that there are 360mls to go.
Of course the mrs has been driving it, so that may explain it.

I always thought vag diesels were better too, but the bora abovebears out my experience.

My mondeo does nearly 600 to a tank ( about 63 quid to fill )

I had a 57 plate passat the other month 130 spec tdi and it was shit on fuel, got about 435 to the tank, driving like miss daisy, way less than the mondy and all the reviews say they're much better than the fords on fuel :s

it really depends on how you drive. Our (misses everyday car) is a golf gt tdi 150bhp.

driving from my mates on friday about 40min drive. i got 59mpg. on the same journey my wife will average about 46mpg.

yet if i drive like a tit, then it can go down to 35mpg.

even 5mph makes a huge difference!!!

i do a lot of coasting and on long down hill motorway nits just let the car roll up to speed on the torque, if u accelerate mpg just drops. gentle on throtle and try keep ur momentum, i hardly ever use the brakes, dont drive up peoples arse, i usually leave a miminum of 3 car lengths. then you can anticipate their moves and adjust ur driving accordingly

in town i just use torque rather than accelerate, do a smooth change at 2000rpm. drive like a taxi man at 30mph in 5th.

I gave it a 1/4mile style launch on the bypass yesterday and it read 7.9mpg

ANyway what you wingeing about, my landrover which i use every day for work, uses 20p of diesel every mile!!!!!!! and to fill the tank costs Ł120
