Default Broadband speed

Is there somwhere to test what speed your phone line can handle? Im thinking of changing my internet provider but dont want to go for say 8mb package when my line can only handle 2mb. I have used Speedtest in the past but that just tests your existing connection doesnt it? Cheers.

unfortunately like ours, we are capable of getting 8mb but only actually get 2mb, they reckon it depends how far from the exchange you are, how many of your neighbours are connected etc

funnily enough, we had 8mb for the first 3mths, the last year or so its been more like 1mb if we are lucky, and as its not guaranteed they wont do a thing about it

try www.speedtest.net

I use speedtest.net but that just tests your current connection not what the line can handle though.

it is down to the distance from the exchange to what you get.
But if you go with virgin they actually put a physical cable into your house and you will get every last mbs.
Just out of interest who was you going to go with?

does it have any thing to do with your modem/router as well?, as i was always stuck on 1 meg with freeserve and then when i switched to talktalk's 8meg business package i still only got 2meg, so when i complained they said 2meg was the max my line could handle,
i went along with their excuse coz my sister lives down the road and was also on 2meg max with virgin , but then when we both recently switched to carphonewarehouse/aol and we got the free netgear modem/router which is rated at 5.4meg ,that is now the actual b/b speed we get.

Only if your original router was proper shit!
Talktalk and aol are both owned by carphone whorehouse. So it is the same connection speed's for both unless you was put on a different package or to stablise your speed due to problem's

yes both owned by carphonewarehouse but different speeds, prices and packages between talktalk & aol.
the old route modem was a orange livebox ,not crap but maybe limited to 2meg max?, i just find it too much of a coincidence that when i used the netgear modem which is rated at 54Mbps max i got 5.4meg download speed, i'm sure i could get the full 8meg speed if i upgraded to a adsl modem thats rated at 100Mbps ?
