Stick it in the bin if it's old enough to not be maintenance free, not seen one of them for a long time
Or they do still do them, and I'm gonna look a fool.
Best to loosen the fill screw things.

A lot depends on what is wrong with the the battery in the first place... if it been left flat for a long time then a long slow charge will help bring the battery to full capacity.
a lot depends on what king of charger you have, most car battery are designed to be charged at the ten hour rate, thats one tenth of their capacity. and then to be left to over charge for some twenty percent... If the battery is relay flat you may have to leave it on charge for several days before it starts to charge... As for the caps you can normally leave them in place as they will have small vents in them to allow them to vent..

Defo leave the caps on as most are designed to vent and return as much moisture as poss back to the battery rather than to atmosphere

get yourself a battery optimiser for future use Pete... connect it up when youre not gonna be using the car ad it'll just trickle charge it to keep it in tip top condition
