I always use good old fairy liquid painted onto the tire with a brush. Spray the wheels, leave them to dry and wash off the fairy.

Used this method for years and have found it cheap quick and easy.

ive done loads of whhels, it is best to pop the bead off on the face edge, this way no edges will be seen, and no balancing is needed afterwards.

however, there are lots of clever masking schemes out there in the body repair trade these days.
i have used foam tape to good effect on wheels before, you normally use it for door shuts, its much more flexible and easy to curl then normal masking tape, and will stick to tyres easily, it also gives a soft edge, so no peeling should occur after the tape is removed.

you can also get plastic masking tape, which again is more ribust and easily shaped than normal masking tape, and fits betwwen tyre and wheel to an extent.

but the best one........SPRAY MASKING....available from most body repair trade places, mask the tread off, and spray mask the edge of the tyre, clean the wheel surface, do your painting, and then peel off the spray masking.
