Just asking as my Audi A4 has 18" RS4 rims on and they could do with a little tidy up...
TBH i dont want to spend the money getting them done properly as it is only a runaround.....
Has anyone painted there rims with the tyres still n them....if so, whats the proceeder

MOUSE
really easy just break the beads on the tyres and wedge the rubber away from the rim edge, this way you can get all the way around the edge and not just the face.

not really, saves the agro of taking tyres of then put on again, balancing, and theres always a risk they would scratch the wheel when they put the tyre back on.
doubt they gona charge you much just to push the tyre away from the rim, after you paint them, all you gotta do is just fill with air and no messing around getting tyres put back on again.

I've done it, no finish issues as masking tape is stuck to tyre, so clear of lip, so paint goes where you're thinking it won't.
Really quite straight forward, just a pain in the arse taping it up ripping all those bits of tape up.
Nice and tidy rim.

FOrget all this masking tape nonsense. Let the tire down and mask it with clingfilm. You can get it right under the gap of the tyre and no worrying about wether it sticks or not. I practically mask everything with clingfilm now

You just need to let the tyre down and as said above ,break the bead.Easier to mask and paint.Than when you have finised, just inflate them and the bead pops back on the rim.

Has anyone does a guide on doing wheels yourself? As I'm looking at doing some myself at the mo, I'll get the tyres taken off though... Is there a special etching primer to use for alloy? And what do you guys do for plastic centre caps?
Cheers

i used 2 part metal filler . the old "stronger than the metal itself" stuff. metal primer worked fine on the alloy and the plastic centre cap.

Reminds me of the time I refurbed the wheels on my evo 6.. got the wheels 2nd hand to refurb and they had knackered tyres on. I decided against getting them removed.. "I'll just cut them off!" I thought.. big mistake LOL. ended up trying to saw through the side walls but there's a lot of those bits of wire in there and fook me it's tough.
Should have seen the blokes face at the tyre place when I presented him with a wheel just with the side walls on

I did my RS turbo alloys myself. and i never took the tyres off, and didn`t mask them up either. all i did was cearfully cover the tyre in tyre shine (megs one) and as its a silicon based poduct, the paint doesn`t stick to the tyre, and just rubs off .

all primed up
and finished

My local bodyshop only charged me Ł160 to refurb my 18 inch V70R alloy wheels x4, i waited until i needed new tyres & bought them from tyre traders on the net saving myself about Ł100 for 4 tyres then took the car & new tyres to the bodyshop, they even disposed of the old tyres for me + balance up the new ones & refit to the car , dropped it down one day & picked it up the next & they're perfect, i've had a few sets done by them as they are so cheap & a good finish. Can't see the sense in me mucking about when i could be out earning money instead, it would cost me Ł150 to stay at home for a day & piss about doing it myself & they do a better job !
