Check the rear chassis rails VERY closely, most are off the roads these days due to them rotting where the springs sit.
Spend a little more and get a Cav Turbo, same looks (apart from facelift lights and grill pretty much) and better engine/more power, 6 speed box and 4x4 (if you are lucky it will still work )

Ive had one and a cav turbo but ive got another gsi cav now aswell as my cossie just getting it resprayed now, there ace cars love them to bits! if you do purchase one make sure the rear arches are ok and the chassis rail as well there the main parts prone for rusting, also try and get one with a Coscast head (made by cosworth) usualy found in late H or J reg's and not a GM head as they tend to go purus, Cracking motors get one now before they start to go up in value which they are slowley!

I always wanted one, too old and rotten now.
150bhp and 4x4, so not quick.
Not seen any on the road for a long long time, so presume they've all rusted away.
Cav turbo's go for a lot of money unfortunately.
Cracking engine and gearbox though, and extremely good on petrol with that 6th gear and an engine that would happily sit at 1000 revs in any gear.
May have been more successful if they'd fitted a 4x4 system that wasn't so dependent on the owners.

A 2wd Cav Gsi will do the job you need. I have had the pleasure of a few of these and love them. Even on a G-Max suspension kit they handle well enough for hard road use. As said, rear arches and chassis are a must to check for gout. The old XE will be guaranteed to have a leaky sump gasket so dont worry about that, easy fixed. Check for signs of head gasket failure as it could be a porous head not just gasket.
The diffs are not the best, from experience, Ive killed 10 so far by driving a little hard on the road.

I had a westminster blue 2wd Cav GSI 16v about 10yrs ago it had done about 180,000 miles when i sold it & was still going strong, was good on petrol if i remember, i ran one whilst i was recovering from the costs of running a Cossie ! Good little car even though i can't stand Vauxhalls, got it cheap as i worked at Perrys Vauxhall main dealer at the time.

i had a white 2wd one 10 years ago, very good car and looked good on my 17" arrows. Got wrote off by a junkie smackhead heroin addict who sideswiped me, took the side off the cav. he dropped his fag on the floor and as he came towards me all i could see was his hand on the steering wheel.

Had 2 Cav Gsi`s, as said, rear chassis rails including where the spring sits and rear arches. Also, make sure clutch and box are working properly as both mine had problams...

This was my mates old one, when he bought it EVERY panel had been kicked in, he replaced pretty much everything and totally minted it
Then one day he got bored of it, did this, and then chopped it up

...they also do a 2wd Cav GSi so they're not all 4x4
Autocar road tests ( actual tested times not manufacturer figs )
2wd Cav Gsi
0-60 7.9
ss 1/4 16.2
Max 133mph
That wasn't too shabby for a 4 door saloon without a turbo 18 years ago
4x4 Cav Gsi
0-60 8.5
ss 1/4 16.2
Max 128mph
Cav Turbo 4x4
0-60 6.5
ss 1/4 15.4
Max 144mph
