i forgot to say the dickhead who wrote my cav off only had a provisional licence and he crashed into me because he dropped his fag on the floor and was trying to pick it up, the fact that he was a junkie probably contributed to the crash (police blood test showed heroin, metodone, vallium in his blood) inexperiance as a learner driver deffo did. if the road we were on didnt have a curb running along it i could have swerved out of the way but both front and rear wheel were tight against it and i couldnt do anything. A split second slower and we probably would have been hit head on.

Ive never had a GSi but had 2 cavalier turbo's and absolutely loved them! excellent cars and really under rated imo. One had 220bhp and the other had 260bhp. Both never let me down in the couple of years i had them, apart from one 4x4 system letting go. I ended up using it in 2wd and selling it like that for the same as what i paid for it.
I agree, id spend a little more and go for a turbo if you can find a nice one. The Gsi's are not really exciting imo, but the turbo is exciting, especially in the wet!
As said, check for rot, especially aroud the rear springs and chassis on both the gsi and turbo. Check that the 4x4 works well if you go for one. try and get one thats had a recent transer box fitted and keep the tyres even and it should last a long time. Mine lasted 100k, and as long as its looked after there not as unreiable as many people say. Many will now have locked boxes by now, so does away with the hydralic system issues.

My mate has 2, a black one that is being broken because of the rear chassis rails as mentioned!
And a silver one. Both have been reliable and very good on petrol. Handle great aswell for a big 2wd motor.
Great engines, even better when they've been spun round and stuck in a MK2 Escort!
