Custom YB Install - Sump Options
Got the cossy lump & gearbox all lined up in the engine bay today & I have have come up against my first problem - which to be honest I kinda knew was going to cause an issue all along but tried to ignore it! LOL!
So this is my problem.... its called a subframe...
So we took the sump off to gauge how much room we had 2 play with ...this much...
So I have 2 options I can see....
1.) Basically reverse the sump - have the large bump in the sump at the front of the engine rather than at the rear - this would mean altering the pickup pipe. Is this feasible?? Who can do it for me? Would this cause me any issues in the long run? Surge? Not picking up etc etc
2.) Dry sump system - expensive but would look the part & would do the job perfect - anyone got one for sale?
Unfortunately I cannot bodge the subframe as the anti-roll bar would still foul the sump.
Heres a pic of it lined up in the engine bay..
And how close the back of the box is to the original gear lever hole..

I know Kenny's told me about a YB engine he built with a dry sump system and it turned out that when he rotated the crank by hand it struck the baffle plate...
And that came from Pace - for a YB

Garage19 - well this it what I'm hoping to do - I want to move the pickup & the deep part of the sump towards the front of the engine but I want to make sure that it isnt going to cause me any issues in the future.
I would flatten that section off above the subframe.

I could certainly weld it all up if you did the fab work. ie cut the hole in the sump to give enough clearence and cut the pick up pipe to suit.
Unfortunatly i can't measure how the pick up pupe wuold have to be as i don't have a YB ddown here to try it on.

After re-evaluating my options - I think what I am going to try is to cut away the subframe upto the anti roll bar & then cut a notch out in the sump for the anti roll bar & then strengthen the subframe after the anti-roll bar. This way I can use the existing pickup pipe - also I will get the sump big winged so it holds more oil just as a precautionary measure!

i had a custom sump made to get around the same problem in my conversion. i made no alterations to my subframe or steering rack.the dipstick was relocated towards the front of the block.
