Default Had the 500 on the rollers for the 1st time yesterday! :-)

What a fun filled day I had yesterday

I initially went to Powerstation yesterday to try and diagnose my ignition misfire problem I have had on and off for a while now. Hoping by hooking it up to an oscillascope I could have the problem located down to a specific.

First off it was pissing it down, which anyone that knows me or the car will realise that me, RS500, power and rain have never matched! Such is life though, so I went for it and took the car on the road. lol

I have known the owners at Powerstation for just over 4 yrs now, so took the chance of turning up on spec and hoping they could have a quick look. Upon turning up they didn't let me down and after about 2 cups of coffee they started work looking at the car (even though they were rammed with work - top lads )

First off the car was strapped down on the rollers with all the diagnostics stuff rigged up and a run was made at 2bar to try emulate the slight misfire. Unfortunately due to the lack of traction (even with 2 of us in the boot, glue on the rollers) and the fact the car was raising itself out of the rollers we could not get anything remotely satisfactory in a run up in 4th gear If nothing else it started to prove how much grunt this engine had!

It was then decided to try it in 5th (since this was the gear it was prominantly misfiring in anyhow). Same prodcedure was adopted (strapping down, 2 in the boot and glue on rollers). But just before the first run I got very very very nervous. I didnt fancy the car going up to the rev limit in 5th, cause if I ever did a top speed run I would of prefered to have had Tony look at the engine and map again just to make sure everything was spot on. Call me gay, but we all know that top speed runs can melt engines and I was just plain old nervous. Upon explaining this (although they assured me they would keep an eye on the fueling etc) they agreed they would only take it far enough for the boost to come in to detect the misfire.

So off we went and the first run was completed, clutching in @ 5430rpm. First off she didnt misfire (bolloxs) and the equipment all read as it should of done!! Of course this was due to the lack of load as opposed to what it is really like on the road (with air pressure etc). We tried another couple of runs and it was exactly the same. SO it was back to the drawing board, swapping things and trying out on the road.

After separately trying everything between the coil, plugs, leads, cap, rotar arm it still was fooking misfiring! lol

Some 3 hrs later I had took it out for the final test.

At this time it was absolutely hoofing it down and could only get a decent run at those sort of revs by going down the M5. I got her in to 4th and ragged it through the gear (and by my mistake I was actually on full boost 35psi). It came on boost and felt ok and then at about 90mph it started spinning the back wheels up I have NEVER shit myself so much in my life. I noticed it was on full boost so I turned it down and decided to call it a day and head back to the unit (I didnt think my arse could take anymore)

I headed back (after taking some time because of the traffic) and they were all waiting thinking I had stacked it (they couldnt of been closer to the truth). I explained I couldnt be arsed anymore and perhaps we could try a final power run at full boost in 5th to see if we could either get a misfire again or at least get a reading on the rollers.

After another couple of semi hard runs they went for it in 5th. Again because of my arse issue about the engine, they explained they would clutch well early but higher up then before.

First off she never misfired (surprise surprise), but the power figures more than made up for the misfire problems!!!

507.5 bhp
452.0 lbf/ft

Obviously the car was getting extremely hot and the running gear must of been boiling so hence the high power loss. But this was acheived at 34/35psi with only reving the engine to 6550rpm (the rev limit is either 7600 or 7800 I cant remember)!!! The fueling was absolutely spot on at 7.2%.

At this point I could of gone for a full rev run, but by this time I was tired the car was on the verge of exploding with all the heat so I decided to call it a day.

One of the owners at Powerstation explained that it was without doubt the best Cossie they had had on the rollers as everything was so smooth and that the power came in so well and hard. So much that they have put it in there hall of fame power runs (for which I am the 3rd entry, only being toppled by Simon Norris and some guy with a Skyline )

I know this power level is nothing compared to what has been done recently, but I am over the moon and all the money and hard work has all been worth it.

Huge thanks to Turbosystems, Tony and Michael. Huge thanks to Karl Norris who actually built the base engine when he was at Turbosystems.

So....... IMA it's all down to you to prove that I was wrong and you were right....... get your car on the rollers!!!!

P.S.
Stu - I didnt feel comfortable phoning you for advice as a)I wasn't paying for your time and b)I thought it would be rude while I was having someone else look at the car. HUGE thanks for the offer though, but I think it may be best if I book it in with you!

How comes its losing 140bhp through the transmission ? Seems alot for 2wd. I thought 4wd would lose 100+bhp rather than 2wd

Good effort

Wouldn't being in 5th gear give a lower figure than normal aswell?

PS. You're a panzy, with 395bhp @ wheels, it will still wheelspin 5 up at 125mph in the wet with 235/40 x 17 tyres and a Grp A beam . You just need to keep your foot in to ride it out .

Mike,
It must of been your GRP A coil that gave me the edge!

BlackRS,
The car had been run up a number of times (in fact it was probably the hardest day it had had since I have owned it ) the transmission loss due to heat etc at that power level us horrendous (it is not a straight line equation mate), which isnt helped by mutliple runs before this final one.

IMA,
Your as thick as two short planks of shit mate! Mike achieved 400bhp @ the wheels on his old 550bhp engine dynoed lump. Mine isn't 550bhp so the difference seems about right to me.

Your right though, RR figures are for pubs. But when that RR figure states over 500bhp thats good enough for me. I'm happy.... and thats all that counts.

You havent even got the balls to take yours to the rev limit in 3rd on the rollers, but then we all know how much of a gaylord you are!

Stu,

Thank you very much. When the weather picks up (fuck knows when that will be) I will pop it up...... as I appreciate what the rain means now, when trying to diagnose a misfire in 5th gear!

The low ATW figure is because they ran it in 5th.

I went there on a shootout and ran in 5th, got ATW of like 165

A much lighter bean tin they ran in 4th, got ATW of nearer 200, yet on the motorway on the way home I was all over him in my heavier car.

Edit to say the flywheel figures of both cars that they gave seemed right in comparison to specs and what we had from other RR's

St3V3 C,

I had heard before there were some reasons why 5th was not as good as 4th, but never knew the science. I'm all for an increase in the ATW figures if ran up in 4th! lol

I will probably take it to Nobles next year now (need 6 months to get over my multiple heart attacks from yesterday ) for a comparison.

Ian,
Dont you mean 4th?

Just found this....

One thing that gets in the way is the gearbox. Put a car on a rolling-road and the lower the gear, the higher the horsepower figure will be at the wheels. This is because the losses, called rolling or transmission losses, increase as the roller’s (and hence road wheels’) speed increases.
So it looks like I have some more BHP ATW some where between 5th and 4th...... the problem is getting the car stable on the rollers on full hoof in 4th now!!

Martin,
Excuse me, but my car coincidentally did 162mph in fourth due to the 3.36 final drive and 235/40 x 17 tyres, so as good as running it in fifth on a normal Cossie's gearing .

i guess the high losses are due to the high speed and high load on the tyre contact patch (what with being strapped down and loaded with fatties).

and you don't need to worry abot top speed runs on the dyno as much as on the road as the airflow is not as high meaning that ACT's will probably be higher and the air less dense (hence enough fuel for it).

Almost

Remember that the RR measures torque at the wheels, and calculates everything else. As you go from 4th to 5th, you are changing the gearing, and therefore the torque ATW - so the RR is right, there really is a lower torque ATW in 5th - it just means you can't compare them.

It means that if you had your standard 205/50 x 15 tyres on that you would have only done 152mph @ 6470rpm, instead of 161mph....

Ian,
ROFLOL at your edit!

Mike,
So what rev's would I have to reach to get to 180mph?

Gareth,
Thats a bonus then as I always like to be different! I'm thinking of buying another one and doing dual exit both sides!!!

Quick Reply: Had the 500 on the rollers for the 1st time yesterday! :-)
