Default Plumbers

Looking for a change, was considering doing my HGV test but now looking down this line. What do these qualifications mean to you, and would I be able to get a job as a plumber with them very easy?

many thanks

Ive not read your link but, if you was to go to evening college or get an aprentiship (sp) with a plumbing and heating company and get your quailifications it would be easier to get on later on as most companys now want you fully qualified and with at least 2 years expierience.

Its not at easy as its made out and you will not be earning 80K-120K either, but you can earn a decent living, ive been in the plumbing and heating game for 16 years and im looking to change jobs in around 4 years, im really fed up with all of the qualifications you now have to have.

A.T.M., im ACS accredited, Nat Gas and LPG
Corgi regd
Part L Energy Effiecent
Part P Electrics
soon to unvented registered and have another certificate for combustion gas analysers.

I seem to spend most of my time at bloody training centres than i actually do at work not to mention how much all these courses cost unless you work for somebody.

Steve thanks for the reply, please if you get time just have a quick look at the link. Its 10 week intensive, I could not live of apprentership money but we can take a mortgage holiday and survive on Gem's wages while I was away on the course. I've been making sealed units (glass) for the last 6 years, I'm 25 next month and its now or never. I take home Ł300 a week (basic) and with overtime Ł500 but that is doing 11.5 hour days and Sat. I will be on the same money in 10 years unless I do something about it!
What are you thinking of doing next?

Plumbing is more hassle than its worth. To be honest i think all these intensive training course's are a waste of time. i went to college 1 day a week for 4 years and worked with my Dad for the rest of the time. College was crap for me and i learnt everything i know from him.
i got NVQ 2
NVQ3
done the CCN 1 gas
Unvented
Water board approved plumber course
OFTEC course and its gonna cost a fortune to renew all these.
I been plumbing for 7 and a half years and am know desperatly looking for a different job.
Totally hate it now. Way too much red tape

Kiddie,

its doesnt seem to bad course wise with the qualifications etc, but you will only be a plumber, so you wont have any gas experience or qualifications so you would have to that as well, unless you wanted to be a plumber only (no gas work). Ł5600+vat and Ł250 is a hell of a lot of money for the 10 week course though, there may be some good job leads, but there may not!.

Check around to see if theres any cheaper courses.

As its been mentioned before by the others, make sure its want you want to do before you part with the Ł for the course, as plumbing and heating is not as good as its made out to be, but you carn earn a decent/ish living

apply to bg, they train you up fairly quickly, about a year and a half and pay for absolutly everything as well as a wage and job at the end of it, the pay aint brill at the end of it but you only work four days a week in the summer and theres as much overtime as you can do, but the money insnt to good for the stress you get in winter and compared to other trades
