Id imagine a rod went, then as the crank pushed it back up it tipped over and jammed into the side of the bore, given how thin the block walls are (and made of ally) it wouldnt be able to take that sort of loading

I agree totally mate, awesome engines, and with regards to this picture, I bet a rod went first, which can happen in any engine, so im sure its not a design flaw of the vtec itself.

Not according to Honda! They say they have never had a vtec engine fail.

But I suppose it depends what you class as failure, as technically, that engine could be repaired.

I'm going to get a s2000 i think to replace the 3 door, there is a lad i know who has just supercharged his s2000 which made 340bhp at the wheels at onlt 6psi which cost him a grand total of 3000 pounds lol. I think i might give him a bell and find out the ins and outs of the conversion and get took for a spin in it

Honda dont mean including 1000bhp drag motors or whatever this was, they are referring to a standard engine.

They say they have never had a vtec fail under warrenty, plus i'm guessing running 1 out of oil and the likes wouldnt be considered as a engine failure

Its meant to be mental but peoples views of mental seem to vary vastly, the most amazing thing is though that its still on a completly standard motor including head gasket EVERYTHING. A simple bolt on supercharger and exhaust and remap are the only mods apparently

Not really. New block, crank, rods, pistons, pretty much everything in the bottom end and its repaired. It depends what you class as a repair :-p

Yeah but if you're changing everything relating to the bottom end, then essentially its not the same engine?
Its a bit like Triggers broom on fools and horses, saying he's had the same one for years even though its had 10 new heads and handles or whatever.

the specific wording in honda literature is that they've never had a single failure of a VTEC _SYSTEM_ - take that as you will

Depends what caused the Failure though. If it was down to the owner not looking after it or miss treating the car then its not there fault it went tits up.

Sounds a little optimistic, but i reckon 9psi would see you 340 at the wheels.

I use an S2000 a lot, and there a little tail happy but awesome cars.

I've also got a civic turbo and that was probably about 230 atw on 11psi. (was on standard internals, i'm oin the process of building a new engine for it now)

If you go for it, deffo get hondata ECU, there very good, and also make sure you HPI the car Lot's have been crashed.

Like i said, my civic was around double it's standard power maybe a little bit more, everything was standard, head gasket included. Plus the engine had done 144k miles

Want the registrations and the name of the two dealers?

Both cars had replacement engines and both were less than two years old, neither owner was told they had mistreated the car and both had been serviced properly at the respective dealers , so believe what you like, I know what I know

Its nothing to do with the net. Its a claim that Honda make in their own literature. And, personally, I feel its a claim they can back up. Or else they would have had the shit sued out of them already

I'm pretty sure their claim refers to the mechanism they use to switch to the VTEC. Thats the bit that's never failed. I think it's a pushrod that locks something or other, can't quite remember.

it works on oil pressure basically it locks the middle rocker onto the NORMAL 2 so the 1 vtec rocker in affect push's the 2 valves ie 6 lobes per cylinder 4 normal 2 vtec

Please,
I know a few people with type R's and no1 had such problems. Also i've got an article of 1 that did 21k revs. Was FOOKED but still ran.

Just looked again at that block, its a B16, with sleaves in it, and H beam rods, it's clearly been turbo'd and no doubt was BIG power.

Again you're misquoting it. It says they've never had a vtec unit fail, which isnt a vtec engine

Its like saying ford fiestas are uber relaible because they've never had a bonnet stay fail

I'm not denying they are great engines and they are very relaible, but i know of more than two failures and several with mystery oil drinking problems that the dealers refuse to touch.

The mis interpretation of the quote is awesomely annoying tho.
