Weddings & Being A Best Man..

Weddings & Being A Best Man..
Now this'll be the first time i've done this, so i'm going to ask a really (well it seems like it to me) stoopid question...
At the request of my mate who's asked me to be his best man at his wedding, do i have to buy my own whistle to match his fancy ivory waistcoated bib & tucker?
His is costing nearly £300 And he's saying i have to buy my own
Now maybe i'm being naive, but i was under the impression either the wedding couple buy it or at least put some money towards it
Wheres that Comedy Dan chap, wasn't you best man at Stu's wedding?

Typical practice is that whilst the bride's family pay for the wedding, the groom is supposed to pay for the attire of the best man and ushers.
To keep it simple and limit cost, a lot of people dress ushers in black tie with an alternative cravat/wasitcoat combinations, but traditional best man dress is paid for by the groom.

I'm getting married this August and I'm paying for the whole wedding party.
I'd be embarassed to ask one of the wedding party to pay for their own outfit.
IMO it should be paid for by the bride and groom. After all you are doing it at their request.

Definately hire it, especially if he isnt helping towards costs. 300quid isnt much for that but for someone else's wedding, I wouldnt bother.

Hire it mate. i did when i went to Aus to be best man. even though again i didnt have to pay for it i did chip in to be nice. The groom did pay for most of it.
End of the day you got to think yeh nice being best man etc. BUT its not your wedding why should you fork out for someone else's do lol. At least he should put a big contribution to the payment even if you paid £50 towards it.

You're obviously the ideal choice for a best man if your worry gutting over £300 to make you best friends day go the way he wants. nothing like mates!
Saying that though I do agree that it should be paid for for you.

You need to find out where he's getting his suit from... and if its a shop, hope a hire shop does sommat similar... sure the last time I knew someone who had to hire wedding attire it cost em around £75-£100.... but sod paying £300 for your own stuff.

Paul - if he wants to have a specific suit then he should either 1. Hire it for you or 2. but it for you..
I was in the same boat few years ago and ended up being given the job 72 hours before the wedding. had to pay for the suit hire n everything. Thought it was very bad IMO. was only 50quid but i wasn't given a choice as it was a good friend.
