yeah your right

sorry im just really paroniod now because theres this stretch of road that goes from 50 to 40mph, i always come down this road so normally i do 50mph until about 10 cars lengths away from it then i drop to 40mph, anyway there i was earlier driving in the dark minding my own, when i saw a flash in my rear view mirror, looked up and saw it was the speed cam, no cars went past me and there was only one car behind me, a fair distance away.

But it certainly didnt go off while i was on the white lines

I think it was twice, once when i was made aware in my mirror, second whilst i was watching which is why i know i was bloody miles away when it flashed and no where near the while road markings

They do flash twice, once upon being triggered when you are overspeed and a second time to prove how many lines you passed within a very accurate preset amount of time (thereby giving court evidence that you really were speeding). LOL.

As soon as i saw the flash i looked at my speed and i was doing the right speed though, im 100% sure that when i passed the camera i was doing no more than 40, even if i was that would be ok because speedo generally under read dont they especially ford ones
Does the fact it didnt go off while i was on the white road markings mean it wasnt me who set it off?

i only asked because i was miles away from the thing when it flashed thats why im on here posting and the fact there was another possible car behind me who could have set it off but because it was so far i couldnt tell if the car behind had past the camera or not

Im just scared, ive been driving 6 years and got a clean license

Those cameras do sometimes flash incorrectly, but not often. We have had one in Norwich flashing people who were doing only about 10mph!! LOL. Obviously you don't have to worry if you get flashed and you're not speeding as you won't have covered enough lines in the photographic evidence.

Twice I've known a camera in a 40 limit flash a lorry doing bang on 40, never heard anything.
If your speedo said 40, no doubt doing 36, old cable driven tend to be 10% overead from what I've checked on tomtom. One was a P plate escort, so older one won't be any nearer, unless on big wheels.

Either way it flashes whilst you're on the white lines for proof so if you were sure you weren't on the lines and not speeding then rest easy.
