yeah my computer came with avg installed, but i installed avast instead as i prefer that you can turn of certain sections of the scanner, to make downloading or file transfer on msn quicker

Ive been using AVG free and windows xp firewall for nearly a year, the pc is on the net every single day and i havent got any nasties

Honestly mate, all of this "oh my god i need a really good AV or my pc will melt down" is just all bollocks, its just rumour that spreads to make you buy things you dont really need

Dont visit shitty random/dodgy websites and you will be fine, and make sure you always keep windows up to date and your web browser, and also scan once a week with spybot/adaware programmes

ive just had to put my pc in to get fixed again after being infected with a virus even though i had macafee . it didnt detect anything . shop informed me macafee is shit and recommended avast.
previously i was using norton and that also failed me with the shop detecting 55 different viruses, mostly low risk, on it when they fixed it.

I use AVG and AdAware. Thats it.

Norton and McAfee aren't worth the bother, infact Norton is as bad as the worst virus I have ever had in terms of being really annoying and hard to get rid of.

my server checks my email with industry standard checking software.

i NEVER have any issues.

Another Avast user here.... I used AVG for years, I had to take my PC in for a repair a few years ago and it came back pre-loaded with Avast. Much prefer it to AVG, simple to set up and once you have... that's it, forget about it, it updates automatically everyday and sometimes 2 or 3 times a day.

I only use Ad-Aware for spyware alongside it.

Anti-virus is a totally different thing to anti-spyware and most of the people I know use 2 separate programmes.

If you're using Windows XP or Vista, you should have a built in firewall anyway... just make sure it's turned on.

It's advocated just to run one firewall at a time, so if you want to download a personal firewall... remember to turn off the Windows one.

My PC is pretty safe though, as I don't visit dodgy sites and rarely click on links that are posted on forums.

One way to check and see if your PC is well protected in run a test through ShieldsUP

Click on the buttons in the box one at a time and a check will be made on your PC - File Sharing >> Common Ports >> All Service Ports >> Messenger Spam >> Browser Headers
