Whats the story with these guys?? what exactly is it? are they any good or is manual the way to go?

Once you get used to it you'll hate manual
Is often slated, but that's people who don't drive it long enough to get used to it properly.

ive got one and its beginning to grow on me-can imagine it to be much better on track

It's basically a flappy paddle shift that can also be an automatic. YOu can also change the speed/ferocity of the changes. There is also a stubby shift so you can change like a sequential box if you like.

I love mine and it does feel very 'playstation'

You can just see the paddle and the stubby lever here. You can also get afdtermarket longer paddles but I find these are fine.

Only driven one M with it, the CSL (All of em SMG). Loved it

Been passenger in a E60 M5, WHICH WAS BRUTUL
