Default Good guard dog

I know a few ppl on here are into their dogs. I wondered what is a good guard dog from ppls experience. I've read the usual stuff about german shepards, Rotti's etc.

But what other dogs are good'un. Big ones for guarding? and smaller ones as watch dogs??

Be warned, when your falling asleep and it's been peaceful for over ten minutes and your dog barks, you will have a heart attack.

Rhodision Ridgeback, Dog not bitch tho. ideally need a large garden and kennel.

Sisters mate has a 3 year old one, when standing on rear legs up against fence he is 7ft paw tp paw.

our bitch is only 35k in weight and has seen off 4 window cleaners when they tried to get in the back of our house

Depends on what you want the dog for... if it is simply to live outside and guard a property, you have to make sure it has an adequate living accomodation too for its size..... German shepherds, rotties and rhodesian ridgebacks survive quite well living outside.

If its a dog to live inside also, then ANY dog you get will ultimately be a good guard dog when it has gotten used to its familly and territory!

Exactly- Most dogs will make a racket or can be trained to make a racket when they hear or see something around "Their" (Your) territory

That's good to know. not really sure exactly. guess a big dog is good back up in case of any probs. but a small dog might be better if kids around etc. Rotties scare me a bit too much i think. Mate of mine used to look after 2 big ones occasionally and when went round there they were very scary, they'd saunter up and look to see who i was and showed absolutely no fear, but didn't seem that friendly either. Think might be scared with kids about until really know that they're ok, but guess any dog can flip under certain conditions

My Victorian Bulldog stayed over at my mothers not long ago and held an intruder.

He is 18 inches in height and just over 5 stone, though this pic dosent do his size justice.

11 months in pic.

There bred to have an excellent tempermant but if they see you in danger will be there for you. Though there are more dogs out there for that sort of thing.

She is GORGEOUS!!!!

A few of you met smelly:

She was just over 11 stone, but would of been a crap guard dog, she was soft as shit! In fact if someone ever did try to break in, she would probably of shown them where the kettle, tea, coffee and sugar was!

Geoff - Have you had any luck yet?

Here's a pic of my pup. People cross the road when they see me coming with him but he is soft as shit. 15 stone of slobber and kisses! His bark is enough to have a potential burglar running, lol.

Sounds as good as my friend Steves' dog.

Opportunist sneak thief nipped in his back door when he popped down the road to post a letter (leaving his dog - dulux dog breed ) laying at the back door.

Fortunately, in some respects, he came back 2 minutes later to find the dog trying to get the burglar to throw his stick for him in the garden
