If You Had The Choice Of These Two Astra's, What Would....
Be your choice and why? I have been thinking of my next car for a long time and I have finally settled on an astra. I am limited to insurance group 8 which is a shame or I would of gone for the 150 CDTi Sri. But, I can't so I have narrowed it down to the following two models.
My first choice is the 1.7 CDTi 100PS SRi.
And my second choice is the 1.9 CDTi 120PS SXI.
One is quicker, and one will handle better? What woudl you go for?
Thanks, Benni.

Unless the 1.7 is brand spankers type engine, it's crap in comparison to 1.9 engine. I know 2005 1.7 engine uses older technology, presume it is.
1.9 comes in 150, so suppose simple remap to up the 120 to this.
1.9 is the latest common rail diesel technology, patented and perfected by Fiat.
Some googling of reviews should help, 1.9 is well regarded anyways

First port of call would be Golf/Passat, some bhp versions must fall in this category.
I'm looking into these, 60mpg and 110/130/150bhp, silly torque and 6 speed makes you wonder why you run a car that does half that mpg sometimes

Own a German car now, had loads of vauxs, but will have to stick to German now on I think.
Towed a 1.5 tonne calibra with a 90bhp gold tdi, through rush hour, foot to floor, racing every fucker, and it averaged over 40 mpg
Was so so pulling it, but obviously Benni will have a higher brake model, and possibly map it
Been looking at Bora too, should be a bit cheaper as they're a bit like the Astra Belmont, sort of don't fit in lol, look good in right spec however.
Can't see anything better than the vw diesels for all round consideration at the moment, and are proven to do the miles etc.
Also, a 330/335 diesel bmw is over group 8

1.9 also comes with the 6 speed box which is very handy on the motorway.
Shame you'll be stuck with the 8v 1.9 if you go for the new 120 but its still way better that the crappy 1.7 as already mentioned

Benni.
They then decided that all the 120's would use the new 1.9 8v unit which is fine for day to day running although when compared to the 16v unit it isn't as good in mpg and smoothness.
As mentioned the 1.9 8v is a good unit and can easily can be re-mapped to 150 if required so certainly not worth discounting its just being picky really when compared to the 16v so nothing to worry about.
The 1.7 however tends to suffer a number of problems, so of the two you mention go for the 1.9, I doubt you'll be dissapointed tbh

Searching for insurance groups of the VW's, and even 320d (12 or so!), can't see you beating one of these for performance limited to group 8, seems good in comparison

Lol, knowing what vauxhall have done in the past with sri's, 10mm off the springs or something
If you're doing that many miles, would prefer the softer ride of the 2 cars.
I think the sri has to be discounted from the choice by the engine alone, by far biggest differene in the 2.
Not driven either though, but engine is important lol.
I'd rather change some springs than put up with an inferior engine
Edit/ Can't see much coming close in group 8 to be honest, seems very good rating when you look at others with similar power etc

the 1.7 is just a revamped version of the old 1.7 engine and very " agricultural " compared to the 1.9DT, it`s good but if you can go for the 150bhp 1.9 , the 120 is a 8v unit and the 150 a 16v unit that can be chipped to 200 bhp, and they really do go for an old oil burner !!
never had any real problems with them other than swirl actuators on the first generation..

The Diva, do you get 30bhp from all diesels? Or do they vary? Thanks, Benni.

ive got an astra 1.9 cdwhatever sri hire car at the mo
goes ok, understeers like a twat in the wet, and its got a sport button that seems to do the grand sum of fuck all
but front seats are nice and buckety/supportive, can get the baby seat and 2 adults comfortably in the back
but the fookin windscreen wipers and indicators piss me off
you have to push them up once for intermittent, then it returns to normal position, then up again full, and up again for turbo
why cant they have old style stuff that stays in each set position?
other than that, not a bad little car. think its got 18"'s on it tho, which will be expensive on tyres
looks are not too bad etc.
but if it were my money, i still wouldnt buy one

fistly neither are race cars, both are road cars so comfort and economy are paramount ( the latter more important to me)
but then theres no way id ever own a fookin crocksall - i hate them !
now the VW range of cars is a differant league - my Leon 130 se tdi - been remapped at MSD 6 speed box PD engine if i drive on the motorway at 60-70 on cruise i get nearly 60mpg, at lower speeds i piss 60mpg - thats what i call a good car - never have to rev it past 2k it has so much torque - oh and traction control as well !
