Default whats a good tow vehicle for under 2k

im looking into getting a new day to day car so im able to tow my xr2 to track days etc as i already have my own trailor, up till now i have relied on mates (GUS ) to tow it for me so want to get sorted with my own tow car,

looking at under the 2k mark

needs to be reasonably smart as it will be my main car for everyday use

thought of mondeo estates, st24, focus estate etc etc as fords are easy and cheapish to work on

your opinions please

thanks
marc

Mk 1 Mondeo V6 Hatch, then later a V6 Estate did the trick dragging my Cossie round the few times I trailered it.

Cheap, loads of kit, nice cars. Bit thirsty though.

What Jay said, without a doubt! 3.1 TD Isuzus will help you pull just about anything.

Except a lady, but then you'd need a lot of corrective surgery for that anyway

cunt

dont want a 4x4 as its only going to tow a dozen times a year if that, and my car & trailor are nice and small so nothing to big needed really, a 4x4 is not what i want for day to day use unless i can get a l200 or x5 kinda 4x4 which is waaaay out my price range

like the idea of the mondeos as they are a half tidy car for the money and loaed with goodies etc,

as i said my sis got a v reg mondy st24 saloon (with boot) with good milage and good fsh for £1900 i think it was, its a 2.5v6 so pleny of poke, heated f&r screens etc, half leather and all the rest....but she wont let me put a tow bar on it

GUS - you wanna tow to bedford then or im gonna drive the thing and get shaken to death

Granny cosworth?

Something like a V6 shogun would be ideal.

I am looking at a TDCI mondeo estate mate, Can get all the tools in as well then.

Just watch the legal tow limits of the car. Was going to get a Audi A4 but only legal for 1400kg.

My car and new trailer will weigh around 1650-1700kg. Mondeo can tow 1800 legally!.

V6 are good but fookin juicy!

I use my audi A4 Tdi Avante as a tow car and daily driver.

50mpg+ in daily use, 40mpg+ when towing my nova on a big trailer
Looks pretty reasonable so not out of place at clients etc
Comfy
Reliable
Quick enough to tolerate, altough certainly not "fast"
Bags of room for sticking kit in at trackdays etc
Cheap bits from GSF car parts

I paid out about 2300 for mine including doing a first service and a towbar

Done 30K miles so far in the last 6 months or so and its not missed a beat.

Is there not a law that states that the tow vehicle has to weigh more than the combined weight of the trailer and cargo?

Kev its the wonder of these modern mobile phones mate, can be online whilst doing 90 odd down the M8. You lot not caught up yet in sheepland

as for a tow vehicle, vectra's have a strangley high GTW for what they are especially the V6's. Best bet would be a decent 4x4 though as suggested, i used to tow a saff with a heavy trailer with a td5 landy and you could hardly even tell it was hitched on even at 80+

Chicken - i'd avoid an ST24 for towing mate, would cost a fortune on juice, they are bad enough without nothing on the back of them!!!! Got for a TDCi or something instead, just as many goodies on board and a lot better of juice!!

My old M reg Mondeo TD would pull a trailer no problems and for £70 it was cheaper than a pushbike and it wasn't in bad nick either.

I've also used a Cavalier 1.8 for towing with, but that was a bit sluggish with a bigger trailer. Both Vec SRi and Omega V6 proven to be good tow cars with a big trailer also.
