For my partners IPOD, I have a 500gb external drive and I have a directory on there that never gets moved.

If they were on the PC and its now been removed, as soon as you sync it, it will wipe the ipod.

I'm sure there MUST be ways round this by transferring the files back, but maybe not or everyone would be ripping other peoples IPODS.

Connect the Ipod, if its in Disc mode, it'll appear in Explorer as a removable disk.

To set disk mode http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651

Turn on the ability to view hidden folders and you'll see a Music folder. In here are a load of sub folders which contain all your music currently on the Ipod.

Copy this off to another location on your PC (music library folder etc) then you can connect the Ipod and not be too worried if it wipes it.

(Experience based on me using a 3rd gen Ipod about a year ago).

Thanks

Matt

You can, you just have to tell it not to update the music library when it sync's with itunes

Theres a far more easiler solution for this. Its called I dump. Its a really basic programme you can download. Install it and plug your ipod into the pc. The i dump takes all tracks from ipod & creates them into a folder on the desktop, putting them into mp3 format also.
Used it loads of times for getting other peoples tunes from there ipod to my pc. Whole process takes two mins tops.

Hope this helps
