8v or 16v - What Are The Benefits? Pro's And Con's?
Two engines making the same power, but one is 8v and one is 16v, what will be better? Surely the 16v will be smoother and quicker? Or does it make no difference?
Thanks, Benni.

For example, the Focus has a TDCi 115 8v and the Mondeo has the TDCi 115 16v. What are the differences and why did Ford make it thisway, will the 16v rev better, wider power band etc?
Cheers

I always thought 16v's will make more power in the higher revs where as 8v's will make the power lower down?
Obviouslly depends on how the engines are specced, as my little pug 205 gti (1.6 8v) feels more powerful in the higher the revs than lower ones.

...to add though, the 16v cars do usually feel slightly better to rev hard.
the old fiesta zetec engine ( 1.25 yamaha engine i think ) was a great little engine and much better than the 8v 1.3 that turned to a tappety piece of shit after 20k miles

in terms of driveabilty - very basically the differences are where peak torque is made, 8v make peak torque much lower down the rev range than 16v... its all to do with gas speeds, its a massive subject though (stu essay style)yadda yadda more valves more top end power though generally
and the question should really be "2 or 4 valves (or indeed 3 or 5) whats the benefits?".... as i've got a a 12v engine, a 16v engine and a 24v engine... only one has more that 2 valves per cyclinder though

the 16V brethes better at the top end
this is due to the area covered by 2 smaller valves being larger than the area covered by 1 larger valve, so you have more air for the engine to breathe
it's very complicated but the basics are that with an inlet and an exhaust cam you can time it so that they work better for both power and emissions, such as the vtec and vanos for example onthe honda and bmw engines
to go into it would require someone like stu/chip/alex or other smart peole who i can't think of off hand now
