if you sell the escos, think of all the cash you will have left as you can get a good 2000 year classic shape for 5k.(4 door).
as capable as a standard escos, but you wont get as many looks.

Testing the future
i have a '93 classic and love it
people talking about chocolate pistons are just talking shit. if you use the right fuel and haven't fiddled with the boost you won't have any problems
only problem that i find is that once it's sideways it very difficult to control, but that's just something that needs experience coming from RWD to 4x4 i suppose

i have got a 2001 bug eye estate and its been spot on never let me down and sounds nice
dont get me wrong as i do love the cossies i just prefer to drive something a bit newer and as its standard (other than the exhaust) its reliable and not too expensive to run so easy to drive whether flat out or just plodding around

I've got a 95 estate.
one of the best all round cars I've owned.
I've had ERST's, sapph, escos.
for crap ERST money you can get an early car with excellent engineering and handling.
stage 1 sapph performance for half the price.
Pistons only become a problem with changes to intake/exhaust and the mapping is not dealy with.
it's a lot more accuratly tuned than an RS and as such less forgiving to changes.
no less unreliable than a ford.
go for it!

After selling the Escos, you can get a good RB5 or even a P1. Lovely cars, personal choice would be the P1, but book figures say the RB5 is slightly quicker.
Chocolate pistons and marshmallows - How original
Mine gets booted a lot, serviced on time and its a hell of a lot more reliable than my Saph was (mind you, it is 15 years newer )

PassionFord Post Whore!!
Just sold my wrx bug eye, it never ever let me down once in the 2 1/2 years i had it,i once got a engine light cos i bounced it off the rev limiter a harsh once (not advised) other than that a great car, great handling and very reliable.
But.....
If you need parts the dealers will take a both kidneys off you,so go to somewhere independant for bits and bobs and servicing, i definately recomend API or Scooby clinic for either.
steve.

I have a 2003 WRX as daily runner been very reliable and good fun to drive, some parts from dealers ok, but others more expensive, But shop around loads of specialists with good knowledge of these cars, only expensive thing I have found is the average 20-22mpg, but if you want this type of car its a price you have to pay.
I would have another in the future as they are well built and good fun.

Sorry to change the topic slightly but was looking at the classic and someone suggested the legacy turbo, why are these so cheap in comparrison? For a manual it seems to be the same money but the auto's are going for 3-4k, any one with any experience with them or got a forum for them?

There are the twin turbo offerings in the newer versions, but most of them are automatic, and most Estates.
The twin turbos are ok....more difficult to tune, and usually have a step at the changeover. Nice cars though.
As for Imprezas. If well maintaned, they are very very reliable cars, and very sturdy. A well maintaned car doesnt rust, doesnt squeak, handles superbly, and in general, will give excellent service to its owner.
But...for people saying about chocolate and marshmallows etc.....A piston is a piston. Its no fault of the piston if it fails.
But big end bearing failures on Subarus is a tad random, and does happen. Thats is the only genuine caveat I can think of, aside from the usual used car warnings and checks.
Problem is....quite often, there is absolutely no way to tell when it will happen.

P1 is the quicker car than the RB5......0-60 comes at 4.6 and RB5 is over 5secs......maybe your getting figures mixed up with the newer one!
Not a dig, just a correction of information
Plus P1 280bhp.....RB5 215bhp unless you had the prodrive engine upgrade
I had a P1 last year and loved it...handling was amazing

Yup...basic RB5 was more a colour and a name.
They did have the Prodrive upgrade options of both suspension, and performance upgrade. But these were options. Aside from that, a RB5 was a basic UK spec car.
The P1 would be regarded as the top spec UK car for general sale.

There were 16 22B TypeUK's....Colin, Nikki etc etc got most of those. Not sure how many were actually available to buy as such.
But in reality, even a P1 is just an STI that Prodrive adapted to become a UK car. The UK 22B's were the same.

They were always the ugly duckling, but throw a few subtle mods at it and they can look awesome (especially in black)

The later ones are much more civilised, so I would go for a bug-eyed version - stiffer chassis, marred only by a fractional increase in weight. We have had ours from new, it has now done 80,000 miles with almost complete reliability (serviced by main dealer every 10k). The only problem that was experienced was the MAF sensor, which needed replacing a few thousand miles ago - never let us down, the engine management light just came on to signify there was an issue with it .
Interior is nicer on the later cars as well, and the brakes (with four-pot calipers even on the WRX) are better than the Escort.
Handling wise though, don't believe the hype, a standard WRX is no match for a standard Escort (unless the suspension is well past it's best), as the base Scoobies are all 50/50 split, which means that they understeer much more on the limit than the Escort, along with (as Nick has said), being trickier to reign in if you over-step the mark.
If I want a fun drive, I take the Escort, if it's a long journey - the Scooby .

If going for a bugeye....In all honesty, buy an STI.
The drivetrain is nearly bulletproof. Better brakes, suspension, gearbox, diffs, driveshafts etc etc.
Although that may just be more of an issue if you intended tuning. Buying an STI as a platform would save you a fortune in the long run.
A friend even went from a UK2000, to a UK STI 2002, and the new model STI was a lot cheaper to insure than the old classic UK car.

I would still have the RB5, but its because I'm getting old and four doors is more practical

i drive a 98 sport and it just keeps going. Only thing that ive had to do is front crank oil seal and ht leads. But hey ho, with my fez rs i had to repair wiring at the fuse box, weld the shell like fek, rebuild the gearbox and so on, having said that i loved it.
But as above some parts are dear. Join a club as some members have access to cheap spares.

Not a bad idea....
I went from a 330BHP Saph to a 2001 WRX (Bug Eye) with the PPP and it's certainly better for day to day driving. Very comfortable and better on fuel ( but to be fair it is 100 BHP down on th Cossie). It's definately not as raw as a Cos but nothing really is!
I'm actually selling my one. It's Grand (Dark) Mica Blue (not the normal light blue everyone has) after £9K as it's low milage, FSSH, 18" alloys, Morettes and a few other bits that were fitted at the dealer when new to make it look like the ltd edition UK300. If you are interested email me at adturb@hotmail.com
