When did you grow out of messing with cars?

...once i test drove the e55 kompressor i realised modding a car to go as fast is pointless as you are still in a rusty ford ..dont miss diy at all as tbh it may keep me alive longer if i dont mod cars

I'm 36 gave up playing with cars about 2 years ago, I left my 2k out in the rain one night and the fucker rotted away so i scrapped it. Drive a 1.4 polo now cheap to run and it gets me to work. Spend all my dosh on my house now

.....jay in reality most modify there cars because they cant afford the real deal ...like me...i modified cossies and bought the 348 to satisfy my schoolboy dream ..i bought my 2 dream bikes (nsr250sp and 916sp)..continued to modify cossies....then i managed my next goal..a production 500bhp car ..i then stopped modifying cossies....trouble is i dont know what my next goal is regarding vehicles

Phil is spot on, I only messed with turbo'd fords because they were cheap and couldnt afford anything else, now I've got a mortgage which takes care of the majority of my income I still cant afford anything decent. So, instead of having a heap of shit that only has speed going for it I'd rather own something comfy and quiet that returns 45mpg.
Until someone hands me a big wedge of cash then I wont be owning a decent car for a long time.

I find it hard that one day you wake & are over the buzz of owning/drivin a fast car an addiction cant be beaten that easily can it. You may be forced to accept cold turkey for Financial or domestic reasons but thats different.
Rod
ps. I would never have my hobby car as my first mode of transport thats a no-go its too fast, noisy & old for that.

...jay once you go ferrari or amg you have to give it over to main dealers to keep value and to make sure its done correctly..i went to change discs and pads on the merc..got the rears done but the fronts were a no way..as on the pads box it said danger of severe injury take to dealer..now yes you think bullshit to get the car to a dealer...but no the bas or whatever needed depressuring and i wernt doin that.
..as for more money bigger toys...yes but once you can afford a proper production spec car i doubt you would look back at modifying cossies or nova's etc...all my opinion of course as i have got to that situation....dont make me less of a petrol head though..

Like some of the others are saying - if your a petrol head you always will be. Ok so it's nice to be able to have a normal/standard/whatever car to use every day. But if your a true petrol head there will always be a need to have a toy to play with.
Also i think half the fun of old Fords for me is that when they are modded and they can give more expensive cars a run for their money it's much more amusing.
Ok so the person in the more expensive Porsche or whatever may have all the comforts etc, but he still looks a complete cunt if he's just tried his luck with an old Ford and had his arse handed to him on a plate.

In the 70's I used to do moto-x. I then stopped that, and spending the money on bikes about 25 years ago when the kids were born. I simply could not afford to race.
Driving fast on the roads was not really an option, I had 4 friends killed on their road bikes and it wasn't nice. So I drove some escort estate cars and Vaux cavaliers.
when I was 48 I applied for my racing licence again.
My A6 quattro is for pleasure and my cossie is for fun at weekends. There is simply no way I could drive any modded car on the street the way I do on the track.
The racing blood is still there.
kenny.

I enjoy messing around in cars.
the kitcar ive built with my dad is as much for me as for him,
With a possible cosworth rear axel and some serious track useage in the near future.
my own next car could be either a focus rs or st. or a landrover discovery3 tdv6 hse, whatever i get will be modded though,
the focus for road and track. the disco for on/off road driving

god theres some bollocks on this thread
and whats the defenition of petrolhead? precisely, its not set it stone, you can alter it to most points you have.
completly different ballgame tho?
im sure phil could afford an f430 if he sold his merc, etc, but schoolboy dreams are schoolboy dreams and they dont change
edit to say, so jay leno and the sultan of brunei arn't petrolheads just because they dont get there hands dirty?

ok so lets level the playing field a bit, if all you "never give up" lot had to use your fun car as your everyday car would you still enjoy it as much and be as committed to the cause?
I've simply had enough of owning and driving a car which only good point is its quick, all the rest are bad points no matter how you dress them up, old, noisy, paranoia, thirsty, uncomfortable etc etc...
and the need to tinker with something doesnt make anyone more or less a petrol head than anyone else, clarkson doesnt know one end of a spanner from the other but I think we'd all agree he's a pretty big petrol head.

Know where your coming from. I did the same when i sold my last escos...just couldnt be arsed anymore and wanted something comfy and useable. I then got into bikes and although they are awesome i find you need even more time for them! But cars ive always been into since i was a nipper.
Luckily i now have both. The A3 s sline tdi and got the RSi to fiddle about with and im happy. I really wouldnt have an escos or anything like that again at this present time....

I would use my rwd escort daily but as the tax has just run out and its only has a 20ltr fuel tank n it hasnt got a heater to demist it in the frosty mornings lol I cant
I would also use my 260z as a day to day hack, but then i've just pulled the carbs apart lol, so it looks like its gotta be the vectra for a bit longer lol
Still not given up mind
