Without question Mains gas is the cheapest most efficient and less harmful to the environment, a new condensing gas boiler will be up to 98% efficient as well, where an oil boiler will be more like 90%

If you have the choice, then mains gas.

Cheaper, cleaner and no huge storage tank in your garden

Cheers

gas in a tank? you mean LPG? no point using it if you are in an area supplied with mains gas.

Have you thought about a ground source heat pump if you are starting from scratch ?

I didn't read your first post properly

LPG can be pricey, and you are tied to the supplier (they supply the storage vessel for free),

where as oil you can shop around for better prices.

might be best to ask people around where your building, their running costs for both fuels.

I personally would go for LPG, just for the fact it is cleaner, but the running costs may well be more.

Also look into electric boilers, Heatre Sadia do the best ones,
I have installed a few over the last couple of years and they are excellant,
The only thing is, I don't know the running costs, but you could find that out.

Cheers

I'm surprised by this, only ever rented a house with oil heating once, and going back a few years but was less than £100 a year for heating/hot water, in 1996, maybe price has changed a lot ?

oil per litre gives a higher kj output than a litre of gas,i removed the lpg and installed oil, half the running costs of lpg,the best/cheapest is a wood burning stove with backboiler if building new i would fit both and combine the system

If building from new I would deffo have Gas, and make sure you have a SEDBUK Band A boiler, also consider Solar, not that expensive and does the job nicely to bring the bills down.

Oil by a long shot but i would not burn kerosene 41p per litre. burn veg oil 24p per litre, printinting ink, reclaimed fuel oil (RFO) 18p per litre

a combination of several of the above, would mean virtually never paying for heating/hot water again.

ground source heating, water solar panel of two on roof (falling in price all the time), wood burning stove in kitchen or lounge with backboiler, and a wind turbine. for a few quid investment, you could pay virtually nothing for your heating. Just need the money in the first place.

edit: although would be a coont to wire and plumb up.

To be honest solar heating is a piece of pi$$, seems complicated when it isn't actually.
