They're well easy to break into, all the panels are interchangeable and you can pop the front quarters off and get into them in about 10 seconds.
They're actually quite good mate, I think the engines are fairly tuneable too, there's one up the guildford cruise that's about 90 bhp and has a dumpvalve so it must be fast.
By LAW though, you have to have neons on them.

Ive had 2 smart cars, first one was a Smart Passion and the second one was a Smart Pulse (special edition version).
Altho I did have a little 'mishap' with the glass roof on the second one, this was the only issue I could complain about. Once you get used to the set up (ie: the lag on the turbo) then they are really good fun to drive. Extremely economical - even with me (Miss Lead Foot) behind the wheel.
For tuning bits and bobs take a look at:

when I had mine, Samrt tune used to do all kinds of replacement bits to tune the engine, they were also the first people to develop the Smart Dump Valve lol Very helpful people to deal with.
I have actually just this minute had my confirmation through for my new car from work; Smart Roadster Speedsilver.......... it'll be here end of October so if you want a drive in it gimme a shout

Oh and as far as the safety goes............ the Smart Trididon (the silver or black chassis) is 3 times stronger than an average car chassis. Altho they are small, you are very well protected so if someone tells you they are not safe, ask them how the hell it got through the UK safety laws with flying colours?!
When they were first launched, the only safety issue was with the rear light as when smashed, they broke up into sharp pieces. These have now been modified to shatter on impact.

We've got a Barabus Smart Fortwo and a Barabus Smart Roadster sat in the carpark at the mo that I would take photos of............. by Spiky has my digicam! lol
We've also got a normal Smart Forfour out the front but its black and grey and looks cack............ but the all black one doesn't look that bad at all, not sure what it drives like yet, still gotta nab the keys for one.

f for the people who are saying they are death traps in a crash, this isn’t really true Euro ncap ratings are graded on how much force the dummys have to suffer in an impact. Due to its small size The shell of the smart is very very strong, the only reason that people would suffer severer or fatal injuries in one of these is that because they are so strong they don’t really have crumple zones hence the occupants sustain quite a harsh force on impact. But no car is tested above 40mph anyway so if you hit something at 60mph I don’t think it would make much difference if you where in a smart or a fiesta.
I personally think they are great little cars, although I don’t fancy doing lots of motorway driving in one
