me cars just fooked , sounds like its done it big style too
anyone help with this, drivin me car tonight and it started to make a gearbox bearing type of noise, kept goin and it got a bit louder, so i pushed the clutch in and it was still there so not the box, pulled in and had a look but couldnt see anything loose at all, thought fuck it , get it home. kept driving very slowly and the noise was really loud, eventually got home and just as i did it cut out, it started again but cut out shortly after, but will start again
heres the puzzle
it was tickin over perfect it didnt feel like it had lost power , nothing is visibily loose, all the belts are on , its not the alternater or p/steering pump, the noise seems to be at the top of the engine and sounds like a tappet /cam noise, it gets quicker when you rev but the noise id deafening and really metallic and grinding, its not your average noisy tappet noise, this is really really loud, bearin in mind that it was ticking over ok, no belts etc are loose, oil is being pumped ok, and there is plenty inanyone got any ideas what i could look at, it sounds like starter jamming but its not, it is horrendous the noise

it defo sounds cam related, but im puzzled as to how it was ticking over ok, i think i should get the cover off and check the things your sayin, i was under the impression that if anything internally went the engine would run shit, but it doesnt seem to be the case do these cams snap? and if so would it still tick over?, gus i will check that aswell, cheers

Just read your topic again, Mine wsnt a grinding sounds though more a clunk clunk That would be where the piston was hitting the valve seat! If i was u so a compression test on it mate as thats easy to do and could rule out major probs etc.

yeah cams do snap as mine did butyou wouldnt get a nice tickover you would get a very very lumpy tick over thats if it would start so dont think that could be it maybe the cam bearings have packed in try listen write at the front of the cam near the pulleys see if it any louder there

i'll do a comp test
take the cam cover off and ckeck for damage and owt loose
owt else as i will do it tomora

well, done a comp teset, 120,120,120,100 in number 4, my mates been over and he reckons my bottom end has gone, prob shell on number4, the fukin things only done 4k since full rebuild

sounds like your cam shaft bearing to me mate, not sure on the set up of cosworth engines but when my old mans volvo cam bearing went it was a fucking sick sound, sounded like finger nails down a black board but worse

Check the cam bearings, cheack the pulleys for vibrations.
Wooden hammer handle. put on engine where you wanna check, and touch the other end on the bone behind your ear....
you'll know if you hear summat you shouldn't....
Then you know where to start at least.
