Default Cleaning valves

What should i use to clean the black carbonised crap off on the valves?

Got to lap the valves in, but unsure what to clean the faces with?

Cheers in advance

I dont own a pillar drill or a pedestal grinder.

I was thinking about using a cleaning wheel on a drill. (Cork like material)

Make sense?

Thats also the way I was shown as a nipper....until i learnt that it burnt my fingers if I got carried away

I use the wire wheel method as said earlier...much less pain to finger tips
