depends on the year of the piece of.....british engineering.

Open up the fob, slide out the battery, press each button and slide the battery back in. Do this quite quickly.

Lock the door with the key, and stand beside the car and press the lock and unlock button one after the other, over and over and over again untill the doors unlock.

If this doesnt work within a couple of minutes, disconnect the car battery for 2 minutes, and start again.

Usually works!

Some later 400's have a security number in the hand book which you enter by turning the key in the drivers side door lock left and right according to the number.
i.e 1234 would be left, right right, left left left.. oh you get the idea!

Good Luck.

It's a common problem - the system just forgets the keyfob code.. you need to get it reprogrammed in, takes about 3 minutes with the right kit. Anywhere with some half decent code reader/scanner kit will be able to do it.
Changing the 5AS immobiliser box and matching key won't help as it still will need matching to the engine ECU.

Worst advice ever! It will be the fob NOT the ECU.. In my life I have never seen a faulty 3AS or 5AS... If the 5AS is changed it will then need matching to the engine ECU.

what's the key fob look like?

depending on the year of the car, Rover had 2 different systems. Infra red or the 5AS.

if you've got an infrared system they are a piece of piss to de-activate, you can tell if you've got a infra red system as the interior light will have a dark piece of plastic at the end.

if its a 5AS unit you will have a 2 button keyfob which will have Lucas written on the back. let me know what you have and i'll tell you what you need to do.

The really late cars had another system with a circular remote called Volcano I think.

think hes already got the eka code. normally the batt holder comes away from the board, re solder and program. otherwise find the box of tricks and find an ignition feed at it, cut it and put it to permanent 12v. dis arm using eka code and hey presto it wont arm up again bacause it thinks the ignition is on all the time
