just found this on directgov site
Car licences obtained on or after 1 January 1997
If you passed a car test on or after 1 January 1997 you're limited to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes maximum authorised mass towing a trailer up to 750 kgs, or a vehicle and trailer combination up to 3.5 tonnes MAM providing the MAM of the trailer doesn't exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle. You'll need to pass an additional driving test in B+E if you wish to tow a caravan or trailer combination which exceeds these weight limits.
so im legally allowed?

Is all quite confusing really, looked into it recently.
I'm pretty sure you can tow, as long as tow vehicle is heavier than what is being towed.
So you'll be fine in this case.

a simple yes or no from the authorities would be better than the mumbo jumbo they write!
im pretty sure providing the weight i tow is under 750kgs which it will be im fine
towing with a 998cc micra will be a hell of a howl

What threw me until I checked up on it, was seeing learner cars with pissy little trailers.
To me that meant people passing after 1st jan 1997 couldn't tow period.
Obviously that's not the case at all.
As far as you're concerned, under 3.5 tonne, and car is heavier unladen than trailer weight.
Second link is more aimed at rigids and artics, from what I can make out from it!
Also looks like after 1st Jan 1997 you can still tow caravans, as long as within spec of 3.5 tonne and caravan lighter than tow car unladen.
