possibly down to cost due to design... in hatchbacks they can easily put them into the boot, between the boot skins... where as the motors would sit into the boot on a sallon and intrude into the boot space... or the thinner motors would cost too much...
this is a total guess by the way... well a logical guess...

This is just what I've heard but don't quote me!
I was told that the airflow over a saloon means the water doesn't stand o the back window but I've had a saloon and this wasn't the case

You need to go back in time.
Before hatchbacks, no one saw the need for rear wipers, not even on estate cars, rear screens were smaller and far nearer verticle than hatch glass, so tended to be self cleaning.
Hatchbacks arrived with large inclined areas of glass close to the rear of the car, where spray from wheels gets thrown up and over the car and settles.
As hatch glass appeared, estate rear glass got bigger and justified the need for wipers.
Rear glass on saloons tends to be quite rounded so would be difficult to clear effectively with wipers
