I was careful to make sure that the compression olives would be away from the bends, maybe the pipe bender damaged the pipe? I suppose anything is possible. I guess a bending spring would be more successful for a shallow bend? No?

Spring bending isnt used at all anymore tbh mate.....

You can do very shallow bends with a normal bender, just be careful.

Just a thought, but you did knock the olives on suffciently onto the tail of the copper pipe. I have come across installations where the olive is on or slightly off the end of the copper, people assemble the fittings without ensuring the fitting/olive is at full depth, then when you compress the olive you dont get a good seal or they blow off when the pressure is applied....

i bought some not too long ago, and they are fairly long as well

can't see the pics but if it's leaking i'm assuming you didn't put any ptfe tape on the joints before tightening them up?

also, if you've squashed the olive too tight it won't come off of the pipe so you'll have to chop it off and start again

1. I got the pipes from B&Q in the end, 300mm was the longest they had in that configuration.

2. I didn't put PTFE on as I was never of the belief that PTFE was needed with compression joints.

3. I plan to remove the copper tails and start again, new copper, new olives.

i put ptfe tape on EVERY joint regardless (obviously not the soldered ones, that wuold be silly ) and probaby wind it around 3 times just to be sure
one some occasions i'll give it 5 wraps in hard to reach places

remember to go with the direction of rotation of the threads, so roll it on the same way as you would if you were tightening the nut as this stops it from unraveling as you do the joint up

i also found that, when working in tight spaces, it's much easier to bend the fitting so that the bit you are struggling with goes on first and then you can have the rest of the fittings out in the open (and you can use a proper spanner to tighten them up with knowing that it will slip off the other end of the open copper pipe

as said above mate disconnect them check there fitted a full slip and the rings or pipe is not distorted 5 wraps of ptfe and retighten should be sorted and on a good note i was always told your not a plumber till you ve had a leak top job plumber

this picture sort of shows the problem
the one closer looks to be just ever so slightly bent
and the other one is well bent as it goes in
did you fit the pipe to the connector first and then tighten it up?
unhook that bit of copper, remodel a bit more with the kink further up a bit
fit the pipe to the compresion joint, with ptfe tape
loads of it
and make sure the pipe goes all the way home before you tighten it up
then click it into the wall connector clips
then push the fittings on at the other end

If its a new fitting you shouldnt actually need to use PTFE tape on the joint.

This is what I can't understand. I've always used PTFE on joins that seal on the threads, like tapered BSP/NPT fittings. However, a Compression join seals on the olive, so thread is just means of crushing the olive down and thereby sealing it. Am I wrong?

I am going to take great care to make the bends as neat as possible. I am fully aware of the distortion that occurs where the pipe-bender does its thing and took care to avoid attempting to seal the pipe on these dodgy bits, but maybe I could be more careful? It's coming apart in a little while, so will keep you updated!!

Right, I have taken one of the pipes off and on close inspection I can see nothing wrong with it. The olive was on a part of the pipe that is not obviously affected by the bend, but I was surprised that in spite of how tight I had wound the nuts down, the olive could be pulled off by hand. In my experience, olives only come off, if atall, with grips. I expected the olive to be embedded in the pipe with how tight I had done it up.

How odd. I plan to bend a fresh bit of pipe, cut it to length and clean it all up before having another go. Man its tight under there.

If the olive hasnt crushed onto the pipe i would double check everything.

Start to belief - I always use it!!

It can also be used to rescue a an olive/squashed pipe from an over tightened compression joint (I still do it sometimes - too heavy handed!) where cutting the pipe down and and soldering a new piece on is going to be difficult due to location etc.

Watch for over tightening. Do it up loose, turn the water on and hip it up a tiny bit at a time if it leaks until it stops...

if the olive hasn't squashed onto the pipe, i'd suggest removing the hwole fitting and trial fitting it to some scrap bits of pipe first
olives are ten a penny so if they squeeze onto the pipe that should rule out the nuts not sealing properly

again, in the pic, one pipe looks like it's just slightly twisted in it's fitting as you can see a mark just above the nut which doesn;t look parralel

on the other hand, if the olive hasn't tightened up against the copper then that's your most obvious suspect, dummy fit everything and then take it apart to see what the score is first mate, better to be doing it out in the open that struggling an 1/8th of a turn in the confins under the bath

Well, I have redone the offending connections and so far so good. I'm going to leave the valves open and taps closed overnight and see what I have got in the morning.

When I looked back over everything, the Compression nuts were a little tight going onto the pipe and I wonder if they may have slightly damaged the pipe on the way on. It would have been slight or I would have noticed it, I aren't that sloppy. Oh well, fingers crossed for a dry floor in the morning!!

the copper pipe should deform well before the metal nuts start to worry the threads on the fittings so if they have gone on tight you might have other issues
